DivX has officially announced that it will be incorporating its technology into Sony’s PlayStation 3 console, allowing users to experience AVI format videos as opposed to converting files into PS3-recognised coding, such as MPEG 3.
Kevin Hell, CEO of DivX, commented, "Our technology will expand the multimedia functionality of PS3 by enabling users to enjoy access to the broad library of content in the DivX digital media format.”
"DivX is currently working to certify PS3 and deliver a superior digital media technology to consumers in the near future. Current PS3 end users will be able to add DivX functionality to their systems via a separate system software update at a forthcoming date.”
The introduction of DivX on Sony’s next-generation console will also afford developers the chance to incorporate the format into their software.

I personally can't stand divx. I encode all of my movies in h.264, since it is a much better codec.

i found this a little suprising since sony has a studio to look after and most people use these codecs for pirated movies. hmm. seems counter productive. but i welcome it because i do have legit uses for it unlike some people around here. i agree great deal for us but just seems to be against sony's normal practices. oh well...it isn't like people can't just convert it to dvd format in a matter of less then an hour and watch it anyways but still not what i would have expected from sony.
