Infinity Ward wants to do away with WWII

If all of the wars of the world were tallied up for the amount of revenue they have generated from books, television, movies, and videogames, World War II would certainly top the list. Even more embedded in the videogames industry, WWII has become a standard done one too many times. Agreeing to this principle is developer Infinity Ward, the visionaries behind Call of Duty 4.
In the latest issue of Game Developer magazine, as highlighted by GameSetWatch, Infinity Ward’s Zeid Rieke and Michael Boon explain what the future possibly holds for their next COD project and how WWII may not be in those plans.
Infinity Ward explains:
"Call of Duty 4 was Infinity Ward's third Call of Duty game, and as such we approached it knowing we needed to do something fresh. We don't want to pigeonhole ourselves any more than we have to, and many members of the team came off Call of Duty 2 promising never to work on another WWII game"
This is how the modern setting featuring the Middle East and Eastern Europe surfaced. In return, COD4 ended up being their biggest endeavor with impressive sales figures and a booming online community.
"Coming off Call of Duty 2, we knew we wanted to do something different for our next game,"
However, Infinity Ward believes that while things need to become more progressive in terms of war settings, WWII is not completely dead.
"...we don't agree with some critics who say that WWII as a genre is dead.” And continued with, "But we couldn't muster the same passion for the subject that we had in our first three WWII games (Call of Duty 1 and 2 and Medal of Honor: Allied Assault)."
If World War II were ever to surface up again, it would be interesting to see more of the Pacific theatre, something that has been pretty much ignored in the shadow of the German/European front.

I think the reason so many developers have shied away from WWII's pacific theater is due to fear of racial backlash. The Europe side of WWII was all fought by white folks... Be they German, English, or American... 99% white people fighting amongst themselves. No fear of racial uneasiness there. However in the pacific it was the Americans vs. the Japanese. In a WWII game it's easy to have characters call Nazi's every foul name in the dictionary and feel good about it. Not so easy to do with the Japanese, especially when Japan is a HUGE part of the gaming community. Not to mention the only use of a nuclear weapon against another country... There are a lot of touchy issues. I'm half-white and half-asian (Thai... not Japanese) myself and personally I see no problem with it... but there are lots of folks out there who probably would.

I agree with TekkenLord- IW should focus on Vietnam for at least one game. I haven't played any Vietnam shooter that was any good. Also there aren't that many out there and with todays technology the jungles and rivers could only look amazingly real. I would hope they would focus on both the PBRs and the ground forces.

NO MORE WWII games pls. Create present-day fictional wars. Maybe we can explore a civil war in africa or a snowy setting like Antartica....Be inventive.. As long as it's not a WW2 game. And pls make a lengthy single player campain.

there was Medal Of Honor: rising sun. thats about it for WWII games where you are fighting the japaneze. and it wasn't so great.(i used to own it) i say keep it current. you can still add on a lot of crap to CoD 4 in terms of weapons. (just have infinity ward watch a couple episodes of FutureWeapons) making up a new war wouldn't be hard. make up a war with North Korea or something so instead we'll have a some jungle themes and stuff. now that would be pretty cool.

@Hububla. oh yeah, that was on futureweapons wasn't it? lol. well there are still many weapons on that show that would've been nice. and i'm talking about primary weapons, not anti-tank stuff you'll use once or twice in single player.

I haven't picked up CoD4 yet, but the only reason I would is because it left the WWII franchise. I like the new modern warfare (sorry for the pun) games like GRAW and CoD4.

We like present day games because we can relate. People can look and say, "Hey that's a mp5!" We feel more intune. ( Not sure that's the word I was looking for) IW did a great job with COD4. Perhaps they should make a WWIII game
