Insomniac: PS3 visuals to see leaps for next four years

Posted on November 15th, 2007 at 11:55 EDT

Brain Hastings, Chief Executive Officer at Insomniac Games, has stated that he believes gamers can expect significant leaps in the visual quality of PlayStation 3 games over the years three or four years.

Speaking to website videogamer.com, Hasting stated, "We're already seeing a big leap in what people are able to do with the PS3 now compared to a year ago, and we're going to see just as big a leap between now and the end of 2008.”

"I think we're going to continue seeing major leaps each year in what people are able to do with the machine for at least three or four more years."

Hastings also discussed the company’s efforts with the PS3 title Ratchet and Clank Future: Tools of Destruction, and its accomplishments at progressing with the consoles architecture compared to last year.

"The amount of action we're able to put on the screen at 60 frames per second really dwarfs what we were able to do a year ago at 30 frames per second," he said.

“What's most exciting is the way things are headed right now I think we'll see just as big a leap from our second generation engine to our third as we did from the first to second."

"Collision and physics are entirely running on SPUs now, which allows us to put much more on the screen at once than we were able to with Resistance. Moving more and more code to the SPUs is an ongoing process and I think we'll continue to see major benefits from this for several more years."

Nice to see a quality developer talk for a change and not complain how hard it is to develop on the PS3.

Judging by Insomniac's record, I don't doubt this for a second.  They have proven twice now what exactly they are capable of and I can believe them on this statement.

Yeah Infinite Ward said it was easy but there are far more that have it isn't.

I thought it was pretty clear the problems developers are having are to do with Ports not with orginal game design.  Obviously 2 of the better games released by all companies across all platforms can be an attest to this dicussion by insomniac.

This is what I have been expecting to hear from a developper.I believe what Mr. Brain Hastings has advanced and it sound really sounds obvious. The PS3 is sophesticated and needs time to master utilizing it perfectly. This is a gradual process and i really don't want to imagine the kind of visuals we will be enjoying in the near future. It will be a kamehamehaX100 000 000. :D

I hope this is hinting at what resistance 2 might be like

Considering the fact that Resistance had A LOT going on, I can only imagine what Resistance 2 will look like. Insomniac could very well outdo the graphics we've seen in KillZone.

Sony should pay Insomniac to teach other developers how to write code for the PS3. No reason to doubt these guys based on what they have produced so far for the PS3.

It only gets better from here on out, more textures, physics, etc and at a higher framerate will ensure higher quality of PS3 games then what is already hitting us now.

These guys actually have the track record to back up these words. They actually have an awesome game to back up their perspective, and there's really no way of arguing with them about it, because until they release a crappy game then there's no reason not to trust them.
