After trading places last week, Sony’s PlayStation Portable has once again managed to edge past the DS in Japan, according to the latest sales figures from Media Create.

Sales of all hardware platforms in the region were down from the previous week, though handheld machines continue to outstrip sales of home consoles by a comfortable margin (minus the Wii, which once again claimed the top spot with over 60,000 units sold.)

The PSP sold through 53,373 units; with the DS pushing 50,151 units of hardware for the week ended February 24.

Meanwhile, Sony’s PlayStation 3 continued to outsell its predecessor, with 14,060 machines sold, compared to the PlayStation 2’s 9,634. Sales of both consoles were once again ahead of Microsoft’s Xbox 360, which managed only 2,001 units during the same period.

The greatest piece of information "Microsoft’s Xbox 360, which managed only 2,001 units". That's awesome, simply awesome.  :)

What's the total PSP user base vs DS total user base?

How many games are available for PSP vs the DS library?

How many PSP games sell over 2 million copies? vs the number of DS titles that sell over that amount?

How many PSP games rate above "9"  compared to the DS games rated "9" by Gamespot or any other major e-magazine?

Look I love my PS3 its great but my PSP was a total waste of money. Its crap and the games are non existant.

Chubbaca youre nuts. How many of the ds games would a hardcore gaming ADULT would play? What I see on the commersials do not interest me. However, psp dont have alot of games per se.But it do have one of the best online games Ive seen on both handhelds and consoles.Syphon Filter:CO. Lets see if you still say that when God of War and Crisis Core drop.DS has nothing to compete against those. The 3D games look like turd.

nice. they better be selling better than the DS. They have FF7 crisis core, now. It would be weird if they didn't.

Alti this isn't related to Final Fantasy. The rates here are for Japan, and Japan has had this game for a long time now. Its only other places like the US thats getting the game late...

This is great to hear. The PSP is soo much better than the DS. What other handheld lets you play your games online? Or gives you access to ALL of your media on your PS3 or PC? I can play my PS1 library on my PSP, and I can even play PS3 games on my PSP. Not to mention I can load movies and music. Yeah, the DS is much like the Wii. A kids toy with no features.

Sony needs to get these quality games released on time, so they can surpass microsoft while they are down due to the slow purchase of 360's.

    @Chubaca

Game ratings mean NOTHING.  NOTHING.  Just wait and see all the 7's Metal Gear Solid 4 gets from all the hater sites.  Mark my words.  They will show their true colors.  It will be their final chance to stop the PS3's momentum (like they did with the PSP early on...and it worked with you) and they will trash that game knowing that people (like you) will blindly follow ratings.  MGS4 = 7.3 at Gamespot--owned by CNET--owned by Microsoft.  MARK MY WORDS.

All I'm saying is that PSP isnt doing very well at all compared to DS. Mikes story is making out that PSP has just taken the crown in Japan when it's probably got less than half the DS users... Total BS sorry Mike.

That DS VS PSP competition was lost ages ago to Nintendo because the most people by far world wide like the DS far better...So what? Who cares? Im not going to bother being a fan boy and try to defend it. Because I cant.

The games I had on my PSP where not worth playing through to the end so I sold it a year ago and have never seen one game that has made me wished I hadnt got rid of it. Seriously PSP controls are lousy and the games are very very very average at best. I'll keep an open mind when Sony does the PSP-2.

www.YourPS34free.com/index.php?ref=4755645 This link will guide you through the EASY process of getting a brand new retail Playstation 3! Here is how it works! First and foremost this is NOT like those other offers you see all over the web, where you are required to sign up for a million "free" offers that end up taking forever and costing you a bunch of money and a headache. You click this link and sign up for their referral program. With this program you are required to participate in only ONE of their sponsor's offers, the one I chose was the yahoo success kit, which only cost $1.95. That’s all I have paid so far! Once you sign up for your ONE required offer you use the link they provide you and post it on forums, or send it to friends, and if someone uses that link to sign up and complete one offer of their own, you get a referral. Here is the cost breakdown of the referral system. 8 Referrals = New retail 40gb PS3 10 Referrals = New retail 60gb PS3 12 Referrals = New retail 80gb PS3 and ONE game of your choice 14 Referrals = New retail 80gb Ps3 and two games YOU CHOSE (includes new releases like Uncharted: Drake's Fortune or Ratchet and Clank Future etc…) Plus many more PS3 offers and others including up to $475 in CASH I have been a member for 3 days and have 10 completed referrals on my account, well on my way to my chosen 14 (Already enough for a 60gb or 40gb PS3). I also have 250 people, who have signed up; if any 4 of them complete an offer I have my Ps3 and two games. It can take up to 3 days for a completed offer to process, so I may have already reached my goal. The company even covers shipping and handling so there is no hidden costs of ANY KIND. This website even has you create an account so you can track your progress the entire way through, and once your package ships, they supply a UPS tracking link. It is extremely user friendly I recommend you research this company online, as they are proven legitimate and not in any way a scam. EGM magazine actually did a story on them 2 years ago to see if they were legit and did in fact get a free system, so they proved it worked! The way it is possible is these sponsor's pay this company money for referring people to them, and using a portion of that money, buy you a PS3 as an incentive for helping them advertise. It is a pretty nice scheme, but it results in me getting something for free so I don't care. This will be my third free thing to get from this company; I have a 360 elite and iPhone for the cost of about 5 dollars. Enjoy your free system, free isn't a bad deal for a great console and a Blu-Ray player! www.YourPS34free.com/index.php?ref=4755645
