Hardware sales in Japan have spiked across the board this past week, as the DSi and PlayStation Portable continue to slug it out for first place while maintaining a comfortable lead over home consoles.

Media Create data for the week ended November 23 reports that the DSi took the top spot with 88,843 units sold, followed by the PSP, which sold through 61,226 units compared to the previous week, where the handheld shifted 38,153.

Meanwhile, the Wii trumped home console sales with 35,298 units shifted followed by the DS Lite at 18,580. PlayStation 3 narrowly managed to outpace the Xbox 360, selling 17,436 units, compared to Microsoft’s effort of 15,474 units sold.

Chugging along in last place is the PlayStation 2, which appears to be losing its momentum in the region with just 5281 units sold.

I noticed over the past few month that the miicroCr@p box has picked up sales all over the regions. It must be the price cut that they did. SOny cant loose in japan if they start falling there it will not be good. (remeber what happend to sega)  They need to do their own price cut like now so it can help the hardware sale. I know that for the money you get a great system and bluray and other features but many people dont care about that they just see prices and when both the 360 and ps3 are on the same shelve or the same side all mom and dads are going to look at is price and thats it. I bought my ps3 from day 1 and I didint mind paying 600 for it I knew what it had but if they dont cut prices I bet I will be using my ps3 as a big Azz paper weight.

i'm with Sony the PS3 will do fine this holiday the hot product this year is HDTV and BLUERAY PLAYERS. the PS3 is getting good reviews from all over the place as long as Sony dont do the dumb BS and have a shortage then the PS3 will be fine.

this is good news for sony!  i'm hoping we'll all hear news on MGS 5  early next year. i9 should ask gameplay plus a store that has online gaming in the midwest where i live if there having a new years party.  i think gaming through the new year would be a good start.   next year i'm buying a sony bravia
