Speaking in a conference call following Activision Blizzard's third-quarter earnings, Activision Publishing CEO Mike Griffith said that he expects PlayStation 3 sales growth to surpass the Xbox 360 in both North America and Europe this year.

Griffith said that he expects the PS3 to sell an estimated eight million consoles in 2008, outselling the Xbox 360 by one-two million units.

Griffith's predictions are as follows:

- “Handhelds” - 24 million units (DS and PSP)
- Wii - 15 million
- PS3 - 8 million units
- Xbox 360 - 6-7 million units

With 2008 having been touted as the ‘year of the PS3’, it is unsurprising that Griffith should predict such an auspicious sales forecast for Sony’s high-spec black box.

    I don't think so, with the 360 being so cheap now.

    The PS3 needs to be cheaper.

    I cant remember if Activision said this last year or EA did.  Are they just gonna keep repeating it every year?  Lets see figures, not estimates boys.

    Sorry but price will be a factor.  If the PS3 was $300 then I would agree but at $400 it isn't going to happen.  That coupled with who just won the election and taxes soon to be increasing doesn't bode well for the most expensive console.

    That depends, are the rest of the world (besides us sony supporters) gonna be smart and buy PS3, or buy a crashing, overheating piece of cheaply made junk.

     @J1gs4w and chubacca

    and if they said it last year the were right.  The numbers showed  9.24 million PS3's vs 8.7 million 360 sold when pitting fiscal reports against each others. The numbers show even greater if you were to tally year (jan to dec) worldwide sales.

    If the wii sells 15 million units then it must be because Nintendo employees are buying them and building a giant fort. seriously WTF?

    i hope that these numbers happen, it would be sweet if the ps3 outsold the 360 by that much, it is possible i mean isnt there already like 5 mil in europe?

    I think that makes it two years on the trot the 360 sells less than the year before. That's not the sign of a console building momentum.

    well i saw numbers that the ps3 sold more units worldwide already so this isnt a hard accomplishment.
