PS3 on the rise in Japan and Germany

Since way before the launch of the PlayStation 3, many analysts concluded the PS3 would never be a competitive product in the market with the Xbox 360 and Nintendo Wii, because of the high price point. Later this year, Sony took a huge move by introducing a 40GB PS3 unit at a lower price in various markets around the globe. It's grateful to know that this move has been regarded as Sony’s best strategy this generation.
With all of that being noted the PlayStation 3 has went on to see growth in regions such as North America and the UK. However, in other markets, such as Germany and Japan, the PS3 has taken the dominating role in recent weeks. In Germany, the PS3 currently sits at the third spot; however, in the month of October, the PS3 sold well above the other machines with 37,000 units sold while the Wii came in second with 28,000 sold and Xbox 360 in third with 12,000 units sold in the month of October.
As for the Japanese market, for the second straight week, the PS3 outsold the Wii by pushing 39,178 units while the Wii pushed 36,230 units. This is all in direct correlation to the newly introduced 40GB model that the world has been raving over since its release, despite it featuring fewer options than the standard 80GB model like the ability to play PS2 games.
Hopefully this surge can continue on through the holidays and into 2008.

If u look at the charts xbox 360 didnt sell as many units as ps3 has sold in their first year, and with the 360s year adavantage on the market and wii's low price, i personaly belive that sony is doing realy well.and most of sony's games are coming out faster then 360's. Im a lil upset about the 40gbs not having backwards becuase sony is famous for the backwards but still. it was finacialy a smart move and sony is doing just fine.

I'm hoping more than anything that sony takes from this the lesson that an early adoptor might buy a 600 doallr system but the real consumer base dosent kick in untill you reach half that price. the PS4 if they're smart wont be more than 400 bucks next gen if they're listening.
I'm upset about the backwards compatability too but I guess in the long run it means that the fact that there are more than 100million PS2s out there today says people are willing to hang on to them and buy the cheaper PS3 rather than be anally assualted by Gamestop's trade in credit. It's a better deal to save the extra hundred bucks on a PS3 than to have them give you 25 bucks for your PS2. I still think the 40gb is horribly gimped in comparison though the loss of 2 USB slots will cause problems eventually without a good hub to replace them.

can t wait for xmas numbers, i think wii and ps3 gonna do well but not the 360, one reason wii seems cool and kids might love it ps3 looks like piece of alien technology and it has brd that some movie enthusiasts might want, that included ps3 is kinda new for many while 360 has been "old" and usually people like new stuff, ehm what more could play role the fact that ps3 looks like its totaly new b/c of noone got the old adds but the news ones rock

Interesting that in the US the 80GB model is the most popular... in PAL terratories the 60GB has been the highest seller due it it's phasing out. ALL they need to do to really boost PS3 sales further in PAL terretories, is offer a cheap model (like the 40GB) but with the internal card readers of other SKUs.
