PS3 price is too steep, says Divnich

EEDAR analyst Jesse Divnich has urged Sony to lower the price of the PlayStation 3 prior to Christmas, believing that causal gamers are unlikely to be swayed by its current USD 399 price tag.

Speaking in a research note, Divnich commented, “While we have no doubts that titles like Resistance 2 and LittleBigPlanet will drive the core gaming market to purchase a PS3, we do, however, have doubts that either title will lure in casual and mainstream gamers.”

“The $399 price point is simply too steep to entice the casual and mainstream markets, regardless of how great Resistance 2 and LittleBigPlanet may be.”

Divnich noted that a lot of potential PS3 owners waiting for a price drop may be tempted to opt for the Xbox 360 instead, particularly if Microsoft’s machine enjoys more success from first party software.

“We still urge Sony to consider a possible hardware price cut this holiday season. If September hardware sales fall below our estimate (under 200,000 units), it could be an indication that the Xbox 360 price cut played a bigger role on hindering PS3 sales than what we originally expected.”

    Duh.  Sony is so out of touch.  The Wii proved two years ago that it's all about the casual gamer for market share.  MS has jumped in with that gimped version of the 360 (but do you think people know or care that it's a weak version?)  Now, if Sony's made some grand decision to be for the hardcore only, then so be it.  I can live with that.  But I hope they don't think they are going to have a blockbuster Christmas out there in this economy with a $200 360 running around.  That's just plain blindness.

    Yeah, the price is $735 in Sweden (about 4400 Swedish Kronor).. I actually can't see how the US can complain about this.. But yeah, it should be cheaper

    i do hope sony make at least a £50 price cut before christmas. i feel it would be mad not to, the xbox is cheaper then the wii now... all be it the core version!

    i dont think enough people know what they are getting for their money with sony. i also havent seen one advert for LBP... the supposed system seller! not that i care about any of this of course.... its just trying to quit the cigarettes leaves you angry at everything!

    you get what you pay for.......... £299 for this console is a fair price, i paid £425 on release day so stop your moaning and thats exactly how Sony see it, if the public cant see the value in the PS3 then so be it. The PS3 is WORTH its price tag, and the 360 price drop highlights the cheap toot thats inside it

    399$ lucky sods.  Here in the UK it's £300.  I don't find it expensive at all and even bought the missus one for herself.  quite frankly even if the casual gamers can't afford (in the US) the equivalent of £227, then they need to get better jobs..

    Well i started off with a wii for the kids, loved it, but wanted to get somthing a bit more meatier, invested in a 360 arcade, took the 1st one back because it didn't work, took the 2nd one back because it made so much noise it sounded like i was living next door to heathrow, was impressed with the graphics on it though and decided to buy a PS3, its quiet has virtually the same games and comes bundled with a blue ray player. Yes its more expensive than an xbox but if you want technology early you have to pay more for it, and in my experiance the PS3 is by far the most superior of the 3 out there, sony just don't know how to market that fact.

    • 9:16am BST - October 8th, 2008

    Profit is more important than marketshare. Sony makes more money on software than hardware anyways, so if Resistance 2 and LBP sells very good come this holiday then Sony will be right where they want to be.

    I don't see the PS3 falling below 200000 units world wide, despite the 360 price cuts. Sony have also stated that they are tracking 30% more than what they expected, which is great for them. This Divinch dude is spinning it like FOX NEWS.

    have you not heard of an exchange rate? the american dollar is worth quite a bit more than ours even with the economic crisis theyre going through. but, to be honest, things are also a little more pricy here cuz we have 20million people compared to 250million, so supply and demand comes into play there.

    I hate to admit it but I have to agree that the ps3 is pretty expensive for the Cr@p that it has right now. If it was the launch console with the 4 usbs and the BC and mem cards that price would still be okay. But just like other people are saying Nintendo went for casual gamers and look they are still selling like crazy M$ now has a dumb down version of the 360 and they are starting to see sales. If sony wants to see a good holiday they would need to drop the ps3 at least another 50.00 to 100.00$US, if they dont they will not have a good holiday season I can guarantee that. Resistance LBP Socom are kick azz games but those games will not lure a casual gamer to buy a ps3.

    It is expensive because you get EVERYTHING in one go. With xbox you have to buy addon: Want Wifi? Gotta spend $100 to get that add on. Want a bigger hard drive? Gotta spend $!79 to get that too. You can't play bluray which is the HD standard now. AND you may have to contend with RROD. PErsonally, I'd rather pay more for something I KNOW works and does everything I want (and is expandable) out of the gate. Save up. for it. Son y marketing to the HARDCORE gamers. And at 399 it is a STEAL. wifi, usb, decent sized hard drive. Quit  whining or get a cheaper hobby

    • 11:21am BST - October 8th, 2008

    @20

    Its not about being cheap or having the cash to fork it out. I have the money to fork it out I have two launch units and I did not mind paying 500 or 600 dollars per console. But the fact that I have premium units and now they want to see Cr@p that is missing BC, 2 usb ports, and mem card readers and still want 400 for it thats crazy. With all that missing there should be a big price drop. Look you say the xbox 360 would cost you more because you need to add wifi and add bigger hardrive no bluray. Okay lets see you buy a new ps3 even the 160gb one and you still have ps2 games you want to play. okay so thats 400.00 then you have to get a ps2 thats what 150 or 120.00. thats 520 or 550 already. If you want to play rock band you have to get a usb squid 19.99 and a mem card reader thats another 19.99 at your local best buy. Get the picture To me Sony is now trying to give us a cr@ppy system and not what was told to us at before launch.

    I also want to say that I am not a fan boy of either xbox or ps3. Even thought I have two ps3s and no longer have 360 RROD to many times. But we all have to face reality and see that this price is to high to set when taking out key features. I would pay 600 bucks to get a ps3 that has all the features my two lauch consoles have.

    • 11:57am BST - October 8th, 2008

    @21. Really? Really? First off who doesn't have a PS2? Second who has a PS3 but doesn't have a PS2? Third. If you really don't have one but you have PS2 games then something went wrong somewhere because you have not been playing PS2 games on PC. Also I can find a USB adapter fro 4 bucks. Wanna try me? And if you must havea PS2. Its called Ebay. Get one for like 20 bucks now that PS3 is here. Now PS3 = 400 bucks. Then lets say you want the USb thats 404 bucks then you want a brand new PS2. 120 bucks = $624 . Now thats maybe 1 out of every 100 people that will have to buy a PS2 and PS3 and maybe even less. So lets compare that to 360. $200 for one, have to buy the USB port. $204, A harddrive $100, a wife connector, $100, a Blue Ray player, $350, = $759. And even then your 360 is going to break as soon as warranty is gone. So say bye bye to another $100 and then you have to pay monthly fees to play online. So over a course of the 360's lifetime look to pay a few more hundred dollars. So what do we have? 360 is 2x more expensive and 30 times less reliable. Who wins? Consumers need to think. Short term 360. Long term PS3. They look as wow im saving money... im like no.. your spending more and proably gonna have doctor bills when you get RROD when warranty is gone and M$ costumer service sucks.

    @22

    you might be right about getting usb and mem card reader for 4 bucks but I want something that is going to look nice and not f#$k up my look in my living room so im still going to say 20 bucks for each. Second you are not getting the picture im not trying to say that the ps3 cost more than the 360 but in my opinion they are trying to sell a ps3 with less features for 400 bucks when they should be selling it for 299 or 350US$ because its missing all of the lauch units, and this holiday season they wont see a big demand because other consoles are 299 or 199.99. Look me and you can compare and see what is better but think of it as a parent and go to store you are not going to buy something that is 400.00 because right next to ti you will see a wii or a 360 for way less. You might know that the ps3 has better graphics and all that fancy works and free online. But right now parents have other things to buy and pay off. Oh and blueray I agree with you right now you can get one for 299.00 but in all honesty I have a lot of friends with ps3s and out of all of them I would say 3 total including me watch blueray movies. At this point in time that should not be a factor when trying to see that the ps3 will cost you more that 400 bucks and thats with out all the good features. You are right in the long run you will pay more for the 360 because of the online monthly fee and have to buy a blueray player but right now sony needs to get with it and drop price on the current sku's. There is no reason why they should be 400.00 bucks when they are missing a big piece of features.

    Don't you think if Sony could reduce the price they would have already done it.  They are getting a nice return at the current price, so why change it?  The $200 xbox is so stripped down that it barely passes for a system.  With the economic downturn, we will see how the casual market reacts.  Wiis will still fly off the shelves because parents want to give their kids a new system without paying mucho bucks.  I was never a fan of this market because many of these folks are only buying them for the coolness factor.  Casual gamers buy games at a much lower rate and their buying patterns are unpredicatible. Analysts are nothing more than fortune tellers, and we know how often they are ever right.  I don't think Sony has gotten dumb overnight.  I would trust them over some intern who probably just graduated from college.

    From what i heard microsoft is losing alot of money on the cheaper 360`s and its still all old tech they have in it.i think with the amazing games coming out,run up to chrimbo and the credit crunch sony should at least give a big TEMPORARY price cut and im sure that would please everyone(gamers/fanboys/sony share holders)
