Store PlayTV recordings anywhere

Sony’s PlayTV recorder of digital TV will allow users to do whatever they’d like with their recordings. The recordings will be transferrable to any media device you’d like to move it to, whether that be a laptop, your PlayStation Portable, and even a thumb drive.

Mark Bunting, a producer at Sony’s Cambridge Studio, demonstrated how the PlayTV’s mpeg-2 file could be transferred from the PlayTV interface to the PlayStation 3’s home menu.

From that point is when you can obviously move it to any other storage medium. There is absolutely no copyright protection on this material, which apparently makes it evident that it will be a huge source for potential pirated software. When questioned about this, Bunting made it known that they’re aware of this and that they’d hope their users would use good judgment when utilizing the media.

"Anything you like, really, as long as you do it legally. It's in its raw format," he said. "We've talked to our legal department about it," explained Bunting. "All we're doing is moving it out of PlayTV and to the cross-media bar as if it was any other recording. So hopefully users won't do stuff they shouldn't do with it. If I'm prohibited from getting the recording off and storing it somewhere else because some other dude is making money out of selling it, then I'd rather they brought the law in to catch those people."

PlayTV has yet to have a release date announced nor a sticking price, so when that information drops, we’ll be sure to bring it to you.

Why would someone sell tv shows? You can just watch the show or record it yourself. Or pay for it from somewhere legit.

This is a counter-move to digital downloading. While Sony won't directly contribute to piracy, it seems that they are making little effort to prevent it...other than Blu-Ray.

LOL Who needs digital downloads anyway, when u can just record movies off of play tv and dl them free from others off the internet. If  you don't want to depend on a gazillion terabytes of  hard drive space to not get corrupted, then you can use store bought bd's or back your files up to bd-r. Brilliant

This sounds really cool. I would pay probably up to $200 bucks just to get PlayTV on my PS3 if it's not free.

I'm not going to be the person that's going to record T.V. shows and sell them, but I would definanlty upload some of the videos that I record on my Youtube page. I wonder if PlayTV could be use to record actual PS3 gameplay. The Xbox 360 already has the ability to record gameplay and save it too the hard drive.... Come on Sony, it's time to pick up the pace. First get those blockbuster PS3 releases out by 2008 (No more delays) and then get PlayTV and In-Game XMB out on the PS3 ASAP.

When i read this i just thought: Today SONY launched PLAY TV for PS3 now sales of the popular Entertainment console have been skyrocketing...!!!!!!! This made my day i am going to buy this day one when we get digital TV in my county (Aust-Agder in Norway) later this year. America and Europe should have switched to digital TV by year 2012.
