Soldier of Fortune: Payback Review

Posted on December 24th, 2007 at 06:03 EDT
Soldier of Fortune: Payback is like a poor man’s Call of Duty 4 - for the same price.
Pros
  • + Excessive dismemberment is surprisingly hilarious
Cons
  • - A cohesive story is nearly non-existent
  • - Terrible A.I. litters the entire game
  • - The multiplayer is incredibly bland

(continued from previous page) ...well, making for some frustrating encounters. During these occasions, we literally had to scroll our cursor over a general area, note where it turned red, and then zoom in and take the enemy out. Not to even mention when foes spawn behind you in areas you’ve already passed through.

A recurring trend in this generation lays in short single player experiences, and Payback has clearly jumped on the bandwagon. With a campaign that’ll clock in at around six hours (that you most certainly won’t want to play again), at least there’s multiplayer to look forward to. Regrettably, the multiplayer isn’t all that captivating.

First of all, the online mode, which offers play for two to twelve combatants online, removes all gore, which was the best thing that Payback had going for it. Offering a standard feature set seen in plenty of other shooters (deathmatch, capture the flag, etc.) just isn’t enough anymore. It’s entertaining for a bit, but ultimately an unoriginal and forgettable addition to the title.

Soldier of Fortune: Payback isn’t terrible; it’s just not superior to anything else on the market as of now. Its one unique attribute, extreme gore, is all this title has going for it. Decent graphics don’t overshadow glaring gameplay flaws and lazy development decisions. Fortune doesn’t shine on this soldier.

Why is there a screen shot from the 360 version? Surely it should be the PS3 version you're reviewing.

i can't believe how badly this game has completely ruined the Soldier of Fortune name.  Soldier of Fortune 2 was easily one of the best shooters i ever played, but Payback has been the biggest disgrace the FPS genre has seen in a LONG time.

lol. i remember playing this game on the ps2 all the time with my buddy in highschool.  it was just funny how th ai sucked. they basicly would come up behind you in two player mode and  kill you. but, it was still fun sometimes with the rocket launchers when you would go crazy
