Sony: no plans to fix PSP-3000 screen issues

You might want to hold your horses if you're thinking of picking up a PSP-3000. According to PSPFanboy, the new model's brighter, crisper screen has been achieved at the cost of a nasty issue whereby ghostly horizontal lines mar areas of high contrast.

Both Sony Computer Entertainment (SCEI) and Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA) have told PSPFanboy they have "no plans" to rectify this problem.

"PSP-3000 has a new LCD device with vastly improved picture quality, achieving a more natural and vivid picture than older models," a Sony Japan spokesperson commented. "By improving LCD response time to reduce ghosting, the horizontal-line phenomenon becomes more visible. Since this is caused by hardware characteristics, there is no plan to fix it with system software update."

Sony America's rep was a little more forthcoming on the details. "On some occasions, scan lines may appear on scenes where brightness changes drastically, due to the hardware features of the new LCD device on PSP-3000."

"Installed with this new LCD device, PSP-3000 offers more natural and vibrant colors on its screen, but the scan lines have come out to be more visible as a result of improving response time to alleviate the afterimages on PSP-3000. Since this is due to hardware specification, there are no plans for a system software update concerning this issue."

We're not entirely sure how many consumers find the scanlines problem bothersome, mind. The PSP-3000 has put in a titanic performance at Japanese retail thus far, with over 140,000 sold in its first four days on the market.

sony are slowly going down hill if you ask me. They should have pioneered their new OLED screens on the new psp, sure it may have cost a little bit more but you wouldnt have this problem and you have the best screens on the market too!

If its a hardware problem, then surely a software update may not be a valid option to resolve the issue?

To me this statement [they have "no plans" to rectify this problem.] is taken totally out of context, especially when the article also states that the have no plans to resolve the hardware problem with a software solution.

Yes, its a bad state of affairs that SONY need to deal with ASAP, but its even worse that the media are twisting the statements for a more sensational claim.

I havent seen the 3000 so I can't say whether it's a bad thing to see scanlines. I'd say people were over reacting but considering people ALWAYS over react it's pretty much the usual reaction.

i agree with #5 they should have used oled since they invented it . it would cost more but have super high quality , very light weight and lowwer power consuption. but all the cheapskates out there would complain about the price.

I really haven't seen this at all. But it goes to show that it is more about an issue with   the data sent to the screen. I am sure this problem won't rear its head in future titles.

EDIT: why is it that the people I have talked to have not noticed this issue? I am going to drop some more videos on the PSP to check if this is a video problem.

    @16

Ever think that your luck was just bad? With 16 mill sold sony has had relativeely few compaints about the PS3 and as far as I have heard they were resolved in a very good manner.

BTW, I don't think you have to deal with the fan. Give em a call again and speak to a manager.

@16 Sony can't give you a good machine? I've never had any problems (knock on wood) with any sony product. If there's a technical issue about the PSP that "can't be fixed" I'm sure there's a legit reason why that is. Sony techs are some of the smartest on the planet and if they can't figure it out, then I guess it's just something we'll have to deal with. On another note, I haven't seen the PSP 3000, but it can't be that bad. I also believe the comment is being taken out of context. If it really was that big of a problem sony would surely be working on a solution.

If this is a lagit problem, from the way everyone sounds, it's either a few defctive machines or some (losers) that just wana criticize PSP by pointing out something that the general consumer wouldn't have noticed. Though since SCEA & SCEI have IDed this as a "hardware" issue its very possible they could fix this and tell us at the last minute like in the past.

Well, i have t o say Shame Shame Shame, how does this happen....

As a recent purchaser of a PSP2000, i'm a little disappointed in its screen display. I can see bleeding/chroma effects on the menu system !, but I'll live through it.

I dont recall seeing them on PSP1000 models a friend owns.

Nothing visibly wrong within games though, just the menu system, i guess its the resolution or refresh rate used. $ONY you really need a kick up the arze.
