Sony to cut price of PS3 at Tokyo Games Show?

Jesse Divinch, an analyst at prediction market simExchange, has filed a report that suggests Sony should cut the price of the PlayStation 3 in North America by USD 100, in order to maintain a competitive stance against Microsoft’s competing Xbox 360.

While the report concedes that a price cut would ultimately incur more financial loss per console, Divinch observed “Sony’s third party software support could be at serious risk if they allow Microsoft to continue to widen the sales gap."

With all of that in place, the Tokyo Game Show, which begins later this month, will present ample opportunity for Sony to take such an action and may improve the consoles fortunes in its native territory of Japan.

Though this is an interesting concept, it must be understood that as of now, Sony has no plans on dropping the price of their PlayStation 3. However, if the company does drop the price by any amount at TGS or anytime later this year, it would greatly benefit the PlayStation 3 as the gaming industry prepares for what should be an auspicious holiday season.

Stay tuned for more developments as they break.

I dont think they need to cut the price.  They just need more good games to come out.  I LOVE my PS3, and bought it last year, but I have probably still only played 2 weeks a month.  Even if it was 200US, I wouldent play it more.... well maybe next week when other good games come out.

The ps3 is about the same price as the 360 elite yet has far more features, if anything ms should lower the price of the elite to compete with the ps3.

He's right, Sony needs to drop 100 bill$, especially by the holidays, or they are going to be in some serious trouble, even thou its the PS3s first year on the market.

Price cut would be great.  If they go to 449 or even 399, they will sell a ton of units

You know I don't know about cut but I think they need to come up with a system that will stay at 499, or rotate the 80 to 499 and come with the 120 at 599 for the holiday. Or keep the 1 sku and do a ilmited 499 120 for the holiday.

well they are in a mess, lower the price and they'll lose money off each one sold or hopefully lowering the price would GREATLY increase their sales enough to make up for the lost money. but if it doesn't they'll have to put the price back, which will break several hearts who were hoping to buy it for so cheap and thus losing sales and gaining a bad rep.
