Posting on the PlayStation Blog, Housemarque Programming Lead Kimmo Lahtinen has revealed that the PlayStation Portable version Super Stardust HD will hit the U.S. PlayStation Store on December 4.

And it'll only set you back USD 9.99 - less than a tenner for a game with a Metacritic average of 85. Our wallets are drooling.

Lahtinen thinks Super Stardust is a "perfect fit" for the PSP: "pick up and play, it’s like it was designed to be portable from the start." While replicating the exceeding prettiness of the PlayStation 3 on the handheld's processor was tricky, Housemarque has achieved fantastic results. "After a lot of work and because of the choices we made," Lahtinen concluded. "We managed to get more than a thousand objects on the field with 60 frames per second. That’s a lot of things to shoot."

Control-wise, you'll be moving with the nub while the face buttons direct your fire in place of that second analog stick. The game "interpolates" the shooting direction as needed to compensate for reduced precision, and you can also tap the button to spread your shots out a bit. Lahtinen is confident the scheme holds up under pressure, but there's always the option to configure your own controls.

There's a new mode - Impact - in which you can bomb and boost but not shoot, and a new end boss, which, according to Lahtinen, "could leave a bit of something in you pants." Yikes.
