Takahashi believes industry has "lost its direction"

A few days ago, we reported how Ubisoft claimed that the industry is crying out for new IPs in response to the plethora of licensed based games and sequels flooding the industry. Not letting the subject rest, Keita Takahashi, creator of Katamari added his two cents to the situation.
When discussing the topic about creativity, Takahashi said, "Defining the word creativity is difficult in a sense. Even the likes of God of War, for instance, it is really well made. It's a great graphic game with an interesting story. It's not fair to tell them that their games have no creativity. Having said that I do feel many games do lack the wow factor in a sense. Something that you feel very surprised by."
This is coming from an individual who created the Katamari games, which is known for its abstract design and gameplay.
"There's nothing surreal about it. I think if Katamari is considered so creative then to me it feels like the videogame industry in general has lost its direction."
So has the industry really lost its touch? Or is the “Picasso” of the gaming industry just in the mindset that most games should follow his norms? We can only conclude that innovation is progression, and that without it, the gaming industry is stalemate (think the videogame industry crash of the 1980s). Still, with titles like Sony’s Little Big Planet, surely Mr. Takahashi would be satisfied?

the games today try to be so realistic they loose gameplay, whats the freaking point of 1080p if u loose details and other things what the point with big map if the physics take all the energy out of the cpu and all u got left with is 100% destructable environment and no real gameplay, will be interisting to see "the wall" but when i look back at it, it looks like big city that u can destroy and shoot through walls (not that big chance even todays real walls) and will it loose the gameplay or can u do some cool stuff on online like go on bridge and shoot around u so u can do underworld move

Its just like music, it depends on how far you break it down and your own personal classifications. For example, if I take djrussells examples, I could say....AC is just a spin on GTA sandbox. Sure your an assassin but in general your a guy in a large city, completing missions. CoD4 = Any war like fps in the last couple of years, they just added a shot through walls feature. Uncharted = Tomb Raider
As with music one might listen to Korn and the Muse. Where person A see thems as 2 different types of music, another might just see it as ROCK.
I have enjoyed many of the games that have came out and will be coming out.
The only time I get fustrated is when there is a great story and have to worry about game play. Which I know sounds retarted but take bioshock, for an fps it had a pretty cool story but somtimes it was hard to get into or hear cause your worried about your next move. Then again, I guess thats subjective too as some might like that.
Really I'm waiting for a day when some says "I got an idea, lets make a new shadowgate"
I will then be a happy man (no idea why I'm forever addicted to that game)

Bottom line, A well done game that has excellent gameplay, story and graphics far outways originality (COD4) but it is always a bonus when you can get out of all that and still play a game that bucks the trend. Even though that is said i have never played a game that made me think.... WOW, I have never seen/played this before. The core elements are the same even with the new physics, AI and graphics.
People are just whining nowadays because they are looking for things to complain about rather than just enjoying the good in the games. I mean if you play a game like uncharted and then say that the puzzles weren't hard enough, then I think you are just looking for something to gripe about because of the pacing of the game.

Sounds like He's saying "if my game is supposed to be one of the most original out there than we seriously need to get cracking" Maybe he is being misquoted?
But for the most part what he's saying is more originality, less first person Shooters, less mindless hack and slash fests, more fun and different ideas rather than trying to capitalize on the last good one. In this sense I totally agree as long as we dont go overboard like the wii which while it is fun in some senses, sacrifices some fun for the sake of their technology rather than using technology in the service of fun.

since the next gen of gamming i have enjoyed many games BUT not enjoyed gamming. It miht just be cas i have grown up more since then but i rember games like crash bandicoot crash team racing spyro kingdom hearts even some of the weirder low profile ones many of them werent even origonal they were just.. fun I think the gamming industry was so much better when it was low profile when you went to the video store and went hmm ill renntt.... THIS one instead of now adays where most of the time we are just sitting waiting for a title to come out that in the end may be good and may have even been great if we werent expecting it but it will not satisfy our wait and so we will find somthing else to wait for. right now for me the gaming industry is more painfull then fun. mabye i sould jsut sit back stop looking at gaming sites stop looking at games comming out in about a year and just sitt and see what the gaming industry throws at me when the time comes lets jsut hope it throws it at me before i have forgotten that it exists and will not notice. i think living for only the future will only make the present more of a despair espcialy if when the future comes you will only be able to look to another one in the hope that this one will make you happy
