Capcom announced today that the latest instalment in the highly successful Devil May Cry series, Devil May Cry 4, has sold over two million units worldwide since its inception earlier this month.

The game launched in Japan on January 31, hitting North American and European stores slightly later on February 5th and 8th, respectively. The title was preceded by a demo on the PlayStation Store and Xbox Live.

While individual console sales are unknown at this point, the PlayStation 3 version of the game proved immensely popular with Japanese consumers, outselling its Xbox 360 counterpart by a considerable margin.

As a series, Devil May Cry has sold upwards of nine million units worldwide to date.

Since its a multiplate game it really doesn't matter how much it sells from each individual console.

Ugh, I wish people would stop whining about this game.  "It's not PS3 exclusive, there's a required install, waah waah waah."  Get over it guys!  Would you rather it be a 360 exclusive like Ace Combat 6?  Or have it slow loading times like the 360 version?  This game is awesome even if it is multiplatform and yes the PS3 version is better partly due to the required install and it will be even better when DS3 controllers are introduced outside Japan.

DMC4 is a great game. but why would we care how well it's selling after we've bought it?

Sweet, good to know this game was so well received. I have to give kudos to Capcom for making DMC4 work so well on the PS3. If it had the 'ported-game syndrome', I would have been p1ssed.

@gomersoul: We should care how much it sells because GOOD SALES = SEQUELS

@ deldwen.... many 360 owners started on ps2, and as such have probably played the previous installments.

The install sucks but it's still a great game.  People of the series realize DMC just doesn't feel right on the 360 controller.
