Sony wants you to buy games, not subscriptions

In recent months Sony has made it a priority to point out the value consumers receive for their money when purchasing a PlayStation 3. Today, the fine folks at Sony continued that trend by letting customers know that they want you to be able to buy their games and not have to worry about paying for a service that should otherwise be free. The company is of course talking about their competitor's online service, Xbox Live. While Microsoft does expect a $50 a year subscription fee, Sony feels that you should put that money to better use.

"Rather than paying a $50 subscription fee that competitors charge for on-line services, PlayStation Network users could put that money towards a variety of content," the company claims.

Its examples?

* PAIN ($9.99)
* Elefunk ($4.99)
* Guitar Hero Classic Rock Track ($6.25)
* LittleBigPlanet™ Metal Gear Solid® - Level Kit ($5.99)
* Episode of Afro Samurai | Season 1 ($1.99)
* The Dark Knight Movie ($14.99)
* Samurai Sword Rack, Diesel Tiamallo Blue Hooded Top, Ligne Roset Alster Chair for PlayStation Home ($4.47)

-or-

* Super Street Fighter® II Turbo HD Remix ($14.99)
* Burnout™ Paradise (Full Retail Game) ($19.99)
* The Hoff Character for PAIN ($1.99)
* LittleBigPlanet™ Ryu of Street Fighter® II ($1.99)
* Robot Trooper and Basketball Boots for PlayStation Home ($.98)
* Savage Moon ($9.99)

It's hard to argue with the value for your hard-earned dollar in this regard. True, Xbox gamers do have the privilege of cross-game chat, which is a great feature to have, but is it worth the content you could be enjoying on the PlayStation Network?

     Thanks Sony. You need to constantly point out the obvious to the competition and their user base so they know what they are missing out on. Online multiplayer should be free on all systems not all but 1 (xbox live looking at you). But if people are still willing to re-buy their broken consoles then they are also willing to be ripped off each time they use Live, period. Pay for the same features on live that are free on PSN? We all decide at some point.

    For $50 you don't even get dedicated servers in Gears, Halo or any of their big games. PlayStation Network you DO.

    Never mind cross game chat!  Sony really needs to put alot of work into their in-game chat.  XBL chat quality is flawless and Microsoft have set the standard for consoles in regard to in-game/cross-game chat feature.  Even with the official PS3 headset the quality is sometimes dodgy and never feels solid.  My 360 is gathering dust these days and the PS3 is far superior in my opinion but if people want to pay 50 lids for XBL im not going to argue with them.  I just prefer Sonys content.

    they even had to make the obvious MORE obvious.   I know that a business is a business and companies  do what ever it takes to get your money but  I think it's applausable  when a company tries to educate people about value and how to spend your money wisely.

    uh ok what is the point of this list? its kind of embarrassing as a PS3 user to tell u the truth. that they actually put together TWO, not just one, lists of content that totals up to near $50. and its not even that great of content. i mean c'mon, did anyone else notice the Home items in there??

    SONY needs to keep pounding this fact over and over. Once the PS3 price cut drops then SONY will see significant increase in sales. Oh and 1 more thing paying $50 for online subscription for XBL is completely insane. The Xbox 360 is not even worth it at all. $200 for a Xbox 360, $50 for online subscription, finding out you got owned cause your system flashes red priceless.

     @7 this message isnt directed at PS3 users its mearly pointing out to those people who want to fork out $50 on XBL that PS3 you get it free and you can use that money buying games etc. for your PS3...and this isnt telling people what to buy, just suggesting possiblities for them....i mean you could spend all that money on movies or whatever else you want.

    @9, you are correct.
    As for Sony pointing this out I just gotta say "FINALLY"; I mean, they should have marketed this from day one, let customers know they are getting more things than with the Xbox, let them know that all the things they have to pay for to upgrade their xbox makes it more expensive than a PS3 which comes with all this and more right out of the box, let them know that xbox breaks a lot more than PS3... the list goes on and on.

    in game chat might not be its strong point but they can fix it. and when its done 100% then theres no "xbox is better" arguments. id prefer free online, its own servers, than pay $80 (australian) for LAG.

    I dont get how MS can charge, i always look at it like this:

    I bought the console.

    I bought the game.

    I'm paying for broadband.

    SO WHY THE F**K SHOULD I HAVE TO PAY AGAIN TO PLAY IT ONLINE!!!!!!!!

    All they have to say is X-Box Live almost costs as much as 1 new game.  And what do you really get with that?  You get a little bit better chat feature than the PS3, but that's about it.  It wouldn't be that bad if you got a bunch of free games with that, but they expect you to pay for them also.  X-Box Live is a scam!

    Yeah, you have to love free stuff. I had no idea (until i got my PS3 18 months ago) that MS charge for an online play, I assumed it would naturally be free. Poor Xbots (well atleast $50 a year poorer).

    Oh and paying for demos WTF?

     i dont find cross game chat a must need feature to have its not important to have. Sony need another way to make a community for those people who is not into Home as of right now. they need a new layout for every game that comes out so it can be easier for users can create clubs, clans, share ideas, tips and cheats. it also can be use so users clans can challenge each other it we need a new trophy card because the one we have now is pretty dull now.

    i pay £120.00* a year for world of warcraft?
    i dont care, i enjoy it.
    Who honestly cares if xbox players want to pay £50 a year for it, its up to them and its what they want to pay for and enjoy.
    god ^o)

    p.s. im not a geek so don't call me one.

     Take away the fact that XBL charges for online play etc i think content wise Microsoft has the better online options.

    I think the marketplace is easier to navigate and has hundreds more titles.

    But being able to play online for free isn't just a little bonus for the PS3, frankly it's the best thing about it (when compared to XBL)

    I will never pay for XBL, which is why all my online play (burnout paradise, rarely) will be done ps3.

    EDIT

    @19

    No ones calling you a geek dude, don't panic.

    But since you raised the question, it's generally not a good idea to do the following.

    1. Say ps no one call me a geek (kinda open the floodgates for that)

    2. Foot note your * with ISH, to the untrained eye it does seem somewhat geeky.

    But your saved because geeks don't play WOW (j/k)

    Seriously though i agree with your points, people should feel free to pay and play what they like without all the continual comparing and smear campaigning, it gets tiresome.

    @15

    M, im pretty sure you don't pay for demo's on XBL it's part of the silver (standard) member ship i believe.

    However i have only just finished my free gold so maybe those were perks of gold! :O A terrifying thought, i shall check tonight.
