Netflix headed to PS3, eventually

If you are looking for more video download options on your PlayStation 3, you will likely have an additional service via mass online rental company Netflix. In a recent interview with Reuters, Netflix CEO Reed Hastings said he’d like the video service available on all systems, not just the Xbox 360.
Microsoft has an exclusive deal with Netflix right now, but Hastings believes the video rental service will be available on all systems.
Eventually he sees the service coming to portable devices like the iPhone, however; the company is focusing its efforts on consoles and Blu-ray players, and Internet TVs.
“Eventually we want to be on all the game consoles, all the Blu-ray players, all the Internet TVs,” he said. “So we are working in parallel with all of those efforts. Currently our Xbox deal is exclusive and we haven’t characterized it more than that.”
Hastings joined the Microsoft board of directors in March 2007. As for when the video service will arrive on the PS3, it seems unlikely it’ll be any time soon as Hastings did not give a specific timetable.

I can't wait... I'm tired of having Netflix held over my head...
Especially since I HAVE a Netflix account.

"it seems unlikely it’ll be any time soon as Hastings did not give a specific timetable."
Poor logic. If it was soon and he said so, that'd upset Microsoft.

Be nice to have that, than at least we'd have a video service up here. But then again, Netflix isn't available up here either.

Though I am not a big fan of Netflix (just never used it), I think it would be a HUGE blow to Microsoft! Its a pretty big feature to have and really makes the 360 stand out to more to the casual gamers, IMO. With the PS3 at @299 and potentially having Netflix, plus great games = UNREAL.
I wonder what would happen to Sony's current Video Marketplace though?
I know its just a rumer...just my 2 cents!

The thing about netflix on consoles is that to get the play it now content on the 360 you have to have the most expensive account available and to me it's not worth that kind of cost, I would much rather just plug my laptop into my tv or just use PlayOn's media server and save myself the cost. I do have a netflix account btw. Also it seems there are ways to use netflix on Linux though i haven't look too much into it, it could be a good option for the more tech savvy user.

Whoever wrote that article knows nothing about what they're writing about. I'm tired of reading articles about the netflix service as a "download". It's a stream, there is no download to the hard drive. This "reporter" could have just tried the computer based service to find out about it.

I never cared for netflix but I knew this would happen eventually. But the ps3 has a web browser so when the exclusive microsoft deal ends will we be able to just visit the website make an account and hit play like on a pc? The videos available to stream are mostly old and ones ive never cared to see, I wonder if that will change once netflix gets more device support.

@15
For someone who claims the author didn't know what they're writing about... you should take a look at your own freakin post. A stream is still an active download. Doesn't matter whether it saves to your hard drive or not. Data is still being uploaded from a server and downloaded to your machine...

@21, there is quite a big difference between a download and a stream. When the author states this is a download, this is not correct. While you can argue semantics and definitions, the implicit understanding of a download is very different from a stream. When the author uses the term download, he does not mean or even imply that it is a stream and makes no indication he understands that it's a stream rather than a download. When I buy a rental from my PS3, I have to download the entire movie (somtimes this takes a while) then I can watch it. When I stream with Netflix through my xbox, I can watch it IMMEDIATELY.
When people watch Youtube videos, they don't generally consider that a download. If you want to continue to argue that you have to download the content because you're pulling data downstream to your computer then that's fine but it's a designious arguement and does not follow the common use or understanding of the term download. When someone talks to me on my digital phone line, I'm "downloading" their conversation but most people wouldn't consider it such and I can find nowhere in the article that the author meant it under this technical way, rather it appears a complete lack of understanding regarding the material being reported on.

@22
You can "STREAM" from the PSN. If your internet speed is high enough you can start your movie immediatly. It is downloading while you are watching it. So really, better than only streaming as you get the best of both worlds. Watch right now and again later. If your not sure how to do this, just select the movie while downloading and hit play.

that would be amazing, i really hope it would drive some of the prices down on the network, renting movies is a bit too much as it is : /

A stream is always a type of download (albeit temporary), while a download isn't always a stream. Furthermore, the author (Adam Dodge) said "video download options". I would definitely consider streaming video a "download option". I think it's quite a strectch to say that the author "knows nothing about what they're writing about" because he chose to use the word "download" rather than "streaming".

Microsoft new netflix would help them as i can vouch the only reason i even keep my xbox was to use netlfix as it not only has movies to stream but alot of current and past TV shows so its kind of like a DVR for the price 8.99 for 1 DVD or 10.99 for Blue Ray movies included. the service is almost as good as having CABLE which is so over priced. in any case if this comes to PS3 it will be over for xbox 360. seriously. Netlfix has a smart thing going with this Steaming of video's.

My friend has a 360 with netflix, and I got to admit, its sick. Its the one thing I'm really jeleous over about the 360. And what's this whole argument between PSN vs. Netflix debate? Totally different servcices. Main difference is that Netflix has bigger catalogue, a lot of HD movies, and is free on the console (assuming you have live service and are a netflix subscriber). I think its a way better deal than buying or renting movies on PSN.

@29, I would have my Xbox 360 even if Netflix was on the PS3 but the only reason I have a gold membership is for Netflix. I never paid for a gold membership on my 360 UNTIL Netflix came out on it. If Netflix came out on the PS3 then I would let my Xbox Live Gold membership expire and not renew. Honestly, I don't play games online enough to make gold worth it other than for Netflix.
We watch a lot of stuff and it's nice to be able to stream so much content without paying 3.99 for SD or 5.99 for HD! If you watch two movies on the PSN, you can get movies on DVD/Blu Ray and unlimited Netflix streaming for the same price.
So yearh, I'd love for it to come to the PS3 since then I could save money by not having my gold membership. While I use it a little for gaming, it's mostly for streaming Netflix. Anyone that's actually streamed Netflix on the Xbox 360 then rented a 5.99 movie on the PSN would know just how much better it really is.
