Koller: 3D integration on PS3 is "as simple as a firmware update"

Sony’s director of hardware marketing John Koller has touched on the subject of 3D technology following all the hullabaloo on the feature at this year’s CES, reiterating that 3D implementation on PS3 is “as simple as a firmware update.”
Speaking in a recent video interview, Koller stated, “3D is the buzzword here [at CES] and that’s because it takes gaming much further, and the cycle of innovation that we’ve been trying to put into PS3 has landed us in a spot that puts us within the Holy Grail of gaming,” adding, “It feels like you are ‘in’ the game now with 3D, and it’s fantastic.”
The executive also chimed in on Sony’s earlier stance that implementing the feature on PS3 won’t require much more than a regular firmware update: “Out of the box, with PS3, you don’t have to do anything. It’s gonna take just a simple firmware update which most people do regularly anyway, and that’s all it’s gonna take to accolade the PS3 to 3D gaming. It’s just a simple firmware update on the hardware.”
Still, you’ll have to fork out for a 3D TV and glasses to get the full experience, naturally. As for Blu-ray movies, Koller said they would require a separate firmware update: “You will, however, have to have a 3D TV and the glasses to get the full experience and Blu-ray movies in 3D will require a separate firmware update, which will be required by the end of the year,” he explained.

@1 Don't forget a $2000 Tv. This whole 3D craze is absolutely unnecessary and purely ridiculous, especially when it comes to video games.

3d gaming on a pc doesn't require a 3d screen...why isn't the same in a ps3/tv combination? (with 3d glasses of course) ...

It's a shame the hardware (3d HDTV and stupid specs) costs so much. It's about time we had 3D more mainstream, God they've been tryin to break it into the mainstream for the past 20 years lol.
Cmon, just put the prices down and it's all yours!

That's crap, you need to get a very expesnive TV to play 3 D games. Screw you Sony, you will never learn from the 600$ PS3, and now we need to get a really expensive TV. I have 2 PS3's and 2 40+ full HD Tv's.
Failure is written all over 3D, it is recession time and people will not be throwing there expensive HD TV's and get new 3D expesnive TV's.

I don't really see how this is not good news. Yes, the TV sets are utterly expensive and that's why a lot of people may think that this won't work out, but back in the day that's the same reaction CD players got. You need to realize that hardware always gets cheaper. 2 years ago the PS3 was still the cheapest Blu Ray player out there (that's even before the Slim) and now you can pick them up at prices as low as 200 bucks. Additionally it's not Sonys fault that those TV sets are pricey.

I'm not too sure how relevant 3D is to video games, i'd have to see a really neat example on how it would make games better, or even better to look at. I care more about great graphics in general then silly 3D gimmicks.
Devs don't need development costs to rise over this lame hype. And consumers don't need to spend more then they already are with games with the way the economy is atm. They can stick a $2000 TV up their rear.

Oh stop crying guys... I bet if 360 did this ppl would be going WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW!
Look I understand you dont want to buy another TV and like me you probably just got a 42"++ size LCDTV but in the future when prices are down you can be happy in the knowledge that you have access to such a great feature!
3D gaming is going to be great. For some it will come early cause they will either have the money for the TV or are in a state where they were already going to buy a new TV.
Think realisticly why you want to bash this and you will notice that it is due to not being able to get it at the moment.
Im sure when you do get the chance to get it you will be jumping in joy.

I beleive the article says"and that’s all it’s gonna take to accolade the PS3 to 3D gaming. It’s just a simple firmware update on the hardware.” should be acclamate...SP?
Sounds pretty cool to me although i will not have this until it is more streamlined and affordable. Sounds like a lot of whiners out there because they cant afford this. get over it, it is expensive and it will be for a while. hating on this or anything else because you dont have money for it is nothing more than a hippy liberal mentality. let me guess, you guys also hate rich people too because your not yet...or never aspire to be. hate on haters...hate on

As usual - so many of you are so quick to jump the gun and complain.
You wil not be losing out on anything by NOT having a 3D screen! You will still be able to play ALL of the games which have 3D options! Burnout paradise, GT5, blah blah blah!
The reason why you need a 3D ready screen to enjoy games in 3D is the same reason why you need an HD ready screen to enjoy games in HD! PC monitors can often have the refresh rate required and are in essence, already 3D ready.
As for "screw you sony", no one is forcing you to buy a 3D screen.
The inescabable fact is that, in order to produce real, stereoscopic 3D images that you find in movies like AVATAR, you just need a firmware update on the PS3. The hardware is already capable.
Have you noticed how Microsoft has kept ABSOLUTELY quiet about stereoscopic 3D and the 360?
How much do you want to bet that it's not possible?

I think the whole 3D thing may be a phase, then again it might stick for good but definately not for some time.
The whole reason people dont like the idea is that HDTVs are only getting cheap now, 3D TVs are very expensive and will be for some time, you will still need the glasses, and there will only be a few games that support 3D, so it is obvious not everyone will be for it. But like HD it will for sure make the gaming experience a lot better.

this is good news, it's a big step... while sony will surly be selling 3D TV's, so will everyone else. they got your money for the PS3 and he's saying they don't need any more to bring it to 3D spec. you can't blame sony for having to buy any TV to play games... they don't tell you what kind of TV to buy, you just need one. duh.
