Kitase hoping for shorter dev time on next Final Fantasy

Square Enix’s Yoshinori Kitase has said he’s hoping the next numbered entry in the Final Fantasy series will take considerably less time to develop.

Speaking with the folks at GamingUnion at GamesCom last week, Kitase reflected on FFXIII’s development time, noting how Square wanted to make the RPG “absolutely perfect.”

“Obviously we now have consoles with much better specifications. The graphical quality we should target at is a lot higher, so it takes a long time to achieve that quality,” he said.

“And Final Fantasy XIII, for example, was the first ever numbered Final Fantasy for Xbox 360 and PS3, so we really wanted to make it absolutely perfect, and it took a long time to make it perfect. But maybe next time around we need a much shorter time.”

Asked if he was referring specifically to the next numbered outing in the franchise taking less time to create, Kitase replied, “Yes, yes, hopefully.”

calling XIII perfect is a bit of a bold statement not that it was terrible but far from perfect

heres to hoping that XV will have learnt lessons from XIII's shortcomings and improves on it's plus points!

    @1 lol totally true

@2 The reason they say it would take so long to remake 7 with graphic quality equal to 13 is because of all of the different towns and the world map. That takes alot of graphics that they have to code for every single little town and NPC and Inside every single house and door you enter.

I think that they should go like what Capcom did with the Megaman series and create something like FF6 and prior graphically but still make it quite badass and release it as a PSN game. Or they should remake FF7 with not as good of graphics as FF13 but a lot better than the original.

imo i agree it should take shorter,

as in ,,, 0 hours 0 minutes and 20 secs to realise that FF has went to **** as a franchise

well, him along with ALL of us hope they don't take so darn long =)

Take Uncharted for isntance, the second one took very little time to come out so you would think that after the initial hurdle they had to overcome with FFXIII they would have all their assets ready so next game would be a lot faster... I think it's only logical but SE seems to find ways to take forever =S

Shut up kitase. You're an idiot. FF13 sucks and is a horrible horrible game (I own it). Also, you're not going to be able to produce any game in a "shorter amount of time," because as I said, you're an idiot.

I hate when developers whine and complain about new systems specs being the reason a game took so long to develope... frack, haul a$s and get it done and stop your b1tchin! Loads of other devs are out there pulling better titles out of their as$es in a third of the time.

Yes you achieved something with XIII you wanted Final Fantasy to have from the getgo. But you left everything else that was Already THERE OUT!

I seem to have an odd, perhaps misplaced sense of hope for VS XIII though, And as far as a remake of VII goes Just do it already, then you'll you will know how to make to next number in the series and it wont take as long.

If they were going for perfect, well, they failed miserably. You know how people say, aim for the moon, that way, even if you miss you will be among the starts? well, this guys didn't even hit the tallest building, FF13 was the most disappinting game of this generation.

What would Mr. Scrooge say if it were Christmas?..bah humbug....and xiii was a pill of crap with glitter on it. SE has still to please most of their slowly dying out fans....

Hopefully this also means Vs XIII shouldn't take too long to come out either.

hopefully? You're the dev, you MAKE it shorter...

And, really, it doesn't matter if it takes as long as FFXIII, if the result is good...

As for FXIII, great game, absolutely horrible FF title.

I still lawl whenever I remember Square saying that if they rebuild FF7 with the FF13 graphics engine it would take an upwards of 30+ years to remake the game. Hahaha, who said developers don't have a sense of humor? It might be a twisted, cynical, and sadistic one; but it is nonetheless. :P

I've never played a FF game until now. I'm currently borrowing FFXIII and I wouldn't say it's perfect. I love the cutscenes and the CGI and artstyle is amazing, but the gameplay is super tedious and events are very drawn out... Maybe I'm just spoiled by other games that are more fun with better gameplay, but something is wrong when I'm spending my entire gameplay experience longing to make it to the next cutscene (On that note I wish that Square would become a movie making company because they'd be amazing at it). Also I'm finding it hard to keep playing it... I mean once I started playing FF I've played a ton of other games and even bought Bioshock and started playing between now and then. Seriously, the graphics are beautiful (mainly because of the awesome artstyle) but the gameplay is boring. I wish this was a movie so I could just watch it lol.
