Critically acclaimed BioWare RPG Mass Effect 3 has topped the U.S. software charts for the month of March 2012, the latest NPD data has confirmed.
The sci-fi sequel moved double the amount of copies in its opening month than its predecessor managed to achieve back in January 2010.
Of course, Mass Effect 3 launched on three platforms simultaneously, while Mass Effect 2 was originally released on PC and Xbox 360 only.
Apparently, Microsoft’s machine took the lion’s share of sales, with the 360 version of Shepard’s swansong outselling its PS3 counterpart by 4:1.
Elsewhere, Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City managed to flog over half a million copies despite taking a bit of a battering from critics.
In terms of hardware, Microsoft again positioned itself at the summit of the charts for the 15th month, selling 371,000 units. However, PS3 was snapping at its heels with an estimated 337,000 consoles moved during the same period.
