PlayStation 3 has shipped 70 million units worldwide since its inception in November 2006, Sony Computer Entertainment has revealed.
The console achieved the milestone on November 4, 2012, just one week before the console’s sixth birthday in Japan.
Note that the figure represents the sell-in figure, as in the number of units that have been shipped to retailers, and not actually in the hands of consumers.
In addition, Sony announced that PlayStation Move has shipped 15 million units since September 2010. The peripheral has over 400 compatible titles, including the newly-released Wonderbook.
PS3 boasts a whopping 3,590 games with software sales totalling 595 million units globally.
Elsewhere, the electronic giant’s flagship online service, PlayStation Network, offers 170,000 pieces of downloadable content, 57,000 of which are game-related. The rest is comprised of movies, music sports and other entertainment goodies.
A hearty pat on the back for Sony from all here at PSU.com.

The Last of Us, PS All Stars, and Beyond should help boost those figures even further.

@1 How will software boost the amount of consoles SHIPPED? Shipping only means the amount of consoles sent over to our stores from Sony. Not how many people have bought it.
Sidenote, why would we care about this number? Its not as though shortages of consoles is THAT common. I find the focus on this to be a little misleading. Sorta like when Sony would come out and be all "Hey gais, we have X amount of millions of players on psn now!!" Yeah but what about the millions of people with 3+ psn accounts (some of them just sitting around)?
Maybe there IS an importance im not considering? o.0 -

Shipped does mean someone (Bestbuy,Target,Gamestop) has purhased 70 million consoles, right? Last time I checked companys don't ship their products to retailers for free. Obviously, people are buying them and there is demand for them through retail channels.Otherwise, Sony would not have shipped 70 million consoles to retailers. Retailers don't buy products that sit on shelves and collect dust. As long as PS3's are leaving Sony's docks they don't give a S**T! That means Sony has sold 70 million consoles to retailers and their making money on the PS3. If you own a PS3 and would like Sony to continue to make consoles and games for them, this is a good thing. That's the importance of the number shipped.
