Web-based PlayStation Store launches

Although not officially announced by Sony as of writing, the long-awaited web-based PlayStation Store has finally launched.

This will allow you to look at what's on offer in regards to games, as well as movies and TV shows. However, it won't allow you download games automatically onto your PS3 when away from it; you'll still have to go to the store on your PS3 and download them from there.

Hopefully this functionality will be added in the future. You can check out the store here.

Thanks to Eurogamer for the heads up.

I love my PS3, but I need to say this, the PS is an enormous disaster monkey that needs to be completely changed.... so... here we go....

First off the new design looks cool, but it is too confusing to find things, I mean trying to simply type something in is a nightmare alone, and finding other things is just as hard.

Next let's move to downloads.... let me ask you a question, have you ever downloaded something and not want it to be installed immediately!?! Why can I download things in the backround if it doesn't install right after downloading.... and why does every download pend if I am playing a game a doing something else? So... it does not multitask? Sony did you lie to me? I don;t want to stare at a 15 GB download for hours on end while I twiddle my thumbs...

Any who... that's just my rant. I love you Playstation!

@A_Drifter - I will clarify for you that you can download content while playing single player only. Any gaming online or using an online program like Netflix, Home or Folding will pause your downloads. This ensures you have a decent connection. As for installing.. I wish there was an option to install something automatically without turning your PS3 off as well. A feature many still dont know is if you shut your ps3 off using the XMB option, it will ask if you want any content currently downloading to immediately install before shutdown. Another thing many people still dont know is content will install MUCH slower if you are downloading something at the same time. I realized this when the Instant Game collection came to plus earlier in the year and I had gigbytes in queue. They all should have downloaded over night on my connection but only 2 games did and installed while the rest were still in the process. Also the hdd is too busy to install something while you are also busy doing something on the PS3. Not even pc's multitask install. They make you close down all other programs.

Doesn't work on Linux (Mine's Mint Debian, but people from Ubuntu and Fedora also have the 'browser not supported' error). Isn't the purpose of having a web store to be platform agnostic?

Sorry to be awefull but what the H E L L is the point if I'm just gonna have to actually go on the PS3/Vita to actually doownload anyway. I'm guessing (HOPING) this is just some half baked step towards that for the next gen if they can't get it functioning now

@D3seeker - I'm guessing that there will be a lot of people who will be a lot more comfortable with putting their personal financial information into a web-based program whose network might be far more secure than the PSN. After all, web-based shopping has exploded over the last decade. Thus, they can pay for content via the web-based service and then access the content via PS Store on the PS3 without ever having to enter their address or credit card info.

    Just my thought anyways.
