Activision has officially confirmed development of Call of Duty 5, revealing that the upcoming shooter will be set in "a new military theatre."
The fifth instalment in the highly popular franchise will be available for the PlayStation 3, PC, Xbox 360 and DS, and, unlike its predecessor, will also make the transition to PlayStation 2 and Wii.
Speaking in a conference call yesterday, Activision’s CEO, Mike Griffith, commented, "We'll bring the intensity of the recent Call of Duty: Modern Warfare title to a new military theatre, to engage our significantly larger user base which nearly doubled last year as new users came into the franchise.”
It is currently unknown whether or not Infinity Ward will be developing the game.
Stay tuned for more information on Call of Duty 5 as it breaks.

It's Treyarch, it's WW2, and the theatre is the Pacific. I thought this was already widely known?
Think Medal of Honor: Pacific Assault and you're pretty much there.

i am realy sick of WWII game .... i dont give a damn about this game ... maybe if they changed the theme of the game from WWII to something new (like Call Of Duty 5 : Future Wars) then i'll be intersted
Sorry, no sci-fi crap for me. If you want a change, let's do a good Korea/Vietnam game.

ok so you guys actually think Treyarch would embarass and wipe themselves off the gaming map by putting out a crappy C.O.D.5 ? Don't you think that after I.W. success that they would step up and equal or surpass part 4 ....part 3 wasnt ALL that bad..not even close to 4 ....but NOTHING is. So relax i think 5 will be great ....have hope you negative little warthogs you.

my guess is that it's gonna be centered around the nuke that's still in the ship that sunk at the start of cod4 but it it's treyarch i won't buy it. infinity ward needs to be the developer. i also won't buy it if it's ww2.

Vietnam War era would be very cool. I want some jungle warefare. Urban warfare has been done to death. Still, I wouldn't mind something set during the Tet Offensive :)

The only reason why Call of Duty 5 will come out on the PS2 and Wii is for money reasons. I hate to say this, but the big multiplatform games like Call of Duty 5 (possibly) do not need to be released on the PS2 because current PS2 owners would become complacent and would feel that they don't need to upgrade to a PS3 because the same games are coming out on the PS2. Sony needs to discontinue the PS2 by the end of next year at least or these developers need to stop making the big multiplatform games on the PS2. It's time for these PS2 owners to fess up and get a PS3.
But I think that if Call of Duty 5 is going to be set in the WWII era, it wouldn't be much of a hit as COD4. The Call of Duty series really wasn't much of anything and was just another average shooter to me before COD4. The Call of Duty series doesn't need to go back to the stone age in WWII times with those ancient guns. The Call of Duty series need to be going forward and having COD5 set in WWII would be going backwards.
What they should have done, was to have the game series progress through time. For instance, Call of Duty 3 could have been set in WWII, COD4 could have been set in the Vietnam War, COD 5 could have been set in Desert Storm, COD 6 could have been set in Modern Time or something like that.

If Treyarch can do multiplayer like Counter Strike:Source, on Call of Duty, then i won't be bothered. CoD4 was the closest to CS:S on a console ive ever come across, and it rocks!!
I just wish they'd set the single player portion of the game in Afghanistan, or Iraq and not another version of WW2. Like the old sayin goes, TOO MANY COOKS IN THE KITCHEN SPOILS THE BROTH

IW doesn't have any say in it. It's all up to Activision. So I'm guessing that IW wants probly 5 times the money that treyarch would do it for and Activision would be smart to pay IW because they would make 10 times the game that treyarch would make. It''s all sounding like garbage to me. IW should just start their own series and use the same game engine and style of cod4 and come up with a brand new storyline. Vietnam would be pretty sweet but you'd have to use old guns. They should do some jungle warfare but make up a future war and use some of the weapons you see on futureweapons.

Personally, i love WW2 games. Never have too many, but that’s just what i like. What C.O.D. 5 needs, ( if IW doesn’t have the responsibility for making it) is a good engine. That’s all that matters. Look at all the most popular FPS games (of their time). Quake 3 was amazing MP and it spawned MOHAA, COD 1 and COD 2. Halflife , Great engine, Multiplayer was so-so, but spawned Day of Defeat and Counterstrike. If Treyarch can make a good engine that Devs can work with easily, Third party developers can make downloadable mods. CS started out as a free DL mod for HL. HL sold thousands of units just so people could play CS.But I would prefer, if anything, a Vietnam based game or WW2 Pacific based game. I don’t get why everyone wants heaps of guns. All it comes down to is when u unlock the best of each gun type u use it. I like the Leveling in COD4, but think they should have taken it one step further with the RPG aspect. After like level 10, make the character become specialized. Sniper, demotions, Assault etc and let skills specific to the class develop. Eg, snipe camouflage, only visible for 2 seconds after shot when in prone position, Assault could get speed / sniper spot abilities, etc. make games more interesting I believe.Anyway, that’s my 2c -

WWII games are big time over done!
Hopefully Infinity Ward developes this game... I mean, Activision can obviously see people want Infinity Ward and DON't want WWII or WWI for that matter.
I agree with A_Ninja... that would be tight!!!!! Future wars or something like that. Or finish COD4.
Please!!!!!! Come on Activision. We trust you!

@Paranoimia
You Sir are 100% correct. Treyarch dld the press release a few months back saying they were working on COD5 and that it would be the first COD game set in the pacific rim theartre of WWII. They also said they'd toyed with the idea of other modern conflicts including Nam and Korea. In the end they went with wha they knew best, WWII.

No, it is Treyarch, the earliest thing I have heard is its set in the Pacific theatre of WWII, but maybe they will throw us a curve and set it in 'Nam.

They should do vietnam. After the brilliance of the "all ghillied up" level in COD4, doing vietnam would be brilliant, especially with the added guerilla warfare element.
And also, back to madrox's comment about leveling, they should make it like Halo (i think) were you can go down ranks if you perform badly.

well I couldn't tell you how any COD is besides COD4 because I will not play any WW2 game....regardless of how good it is. And if COD5 is WW2 (even if IW makes it), I will pass on that one aswell. The whole sci-fi *phew phew* crap isn't my thing either.
@ psycho_mantis - I too wish BLACK 2 could come out.... IW would do good if they got the rights to make that game....it will be COD4 sales all over again...if not more!
