According to The Wall Street Journal, Sony will announced the much-rumored PlayStation 4.5 console prior to the release of the company’s upcoming virtual reality headset, PlayStation VR, in October 2016.
The report also states that Sony will continue to sell the original PS4 when the upgraded model hits stores. As for the hardware, WSJ claims that the revamped system "would be able to handle ultra-high-resolution graphics.”
We’ve heard various reports of a new PS4 hardware revision in the past few days, with the latest rumors suggesting a holiday 2016 release for the new console accompanied by a $400 price tag.
Meanwhile, Wedbush Morgan’s Michael Pachter believes that the latest iteration of Sony’s flagship machine will be a PS VR-specific update.
Eurogamer was among the first outlets to report on a new model, which claimed that the device is already being prototyped within Sony’s R&D labs. The console is reportedly also known internally as the PS4K.
Sony is gearing up for a massive year for the PlayStation brand. Aside from the launch of PS VR later in the year, the format holder also has a number of exclusive games in the pipeline, such as Dreams, Gran Turismo Sport, Ratchet & Clank and Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End.
PS4 has sold over 35 million units worldwide since its launch in November 2013.
