PlayStation 4, which was released on Nov 15, 2013, has sold over 50 million units.

There’s no denying that Sony continues to keep the momentum going for the PS4, with an impressive lineup of exclusive games from first party studios and partnerships with third party publishers. However, with three successful years under its belt, it looks like Sony is stepping up with internal discussions about the PS4’s successor.

In a recent interview by Nikkei, with Sony President and CEO, Kaz Hirai, he shed some light on what the future holds for the PlayStation brand.

When the CEO of Sony Corp was asked about the possibility of PS5 (the question was: When will the PS5 be released?), Kaz had this to say:

“Our game subsidiary is discussing which direction to take — how to use a big platform like the PlayStation going forward. Generally speaking, I don’t think it is a good idea to drop consoles entirely, since we seek to offer the platform worldwide”

There’s already been plenty of predictions from analysts as to when we’ll see Sony’s next console. While Wedbush’s Michael Pachter beleives a PS5 release will be 2019 or 2020, Macquarie Research analyst thinks we could see PlayStation 5 launch as early as 2018.
