Tekken x Street Fighter is still in production, says Namco

Tekken series boss Katsuhiro Harada has confirmed that Tekken x Street Fighter is still in the works.

The crossover brawler was announced in 2010 alongside Street Fighter x Tekken, the latter of which was released in March 2012. However, aside from a few pieces of art work, we’ve heard nothing on the companion title since.

“We will say first off that the game is still in development, so you don’t need to worry about that,” said Harada-san, during a chat with Siliconera.

He also offered some insight as to why we’ve had to wait so long for the beat-‘em-up.

"There are several reasons why we haven’t released any updates," Harada-san said.

"One of the reasons is, Street Fighter x Tekken was released. That still had updates until recently. One interesting thing we’ve seen with that title when it came out was that it’s not quite what we expected.

"It was not just Tekken fans and Street Fighter fans merging, there seems to be a whole new community growing around that title that wasn’t playing either of the titles up until that point. That was very unexpected, but quite cool.

"It’s something we want to take care and grow. Rather than throw out our title right away while those people are still interested in [Street Fighter x Tekken] we are looking for the right time because we are still developing [Tekken x Street Fighter]."

Last summer, Namco Bandai confirmed that the game was still planned for launch on current-generation platforms. However, with the project still apparently a long way off, one has to wonder whether or not those plans have changed, especially with the impending launch of PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

Tekken x Street Fighter uses the Tekken game engine, so you’ll be experiencing Street Fighter’s finest slugging it out in a 3D arena for the first time. One of the many problems adapting SF characters to this playing field is the use of projectile attacks, which Harada-san admitted was causing the developers a few headaches back in August 2011.
