Resident Evil 2 director, Hideki Kamiya, has said that he’d be up for working with Capcom again in the future, but not on a remake of his critically acclaimed 1998 survival horror title.
Speaking with Metro, Kamiya, who went on to create the much-loved Bayonetta franchise, said that he’s not actually a fan of horror titles, hence why he wouldn’t be interesting in helming a Resi 2 revamp.
“I’ve also heard of rumors of a remake of Resident Evil 2. And even before that, there were a bunch of fans that were tweeting me, or I’ve read a lot of comments like, ‘Hey, what would Kamiya think of a Resident Evil 2 remake?’ My response every time someone asks me is that I don’t really like horror games," Kamiya-san said.
I don’t want to be frightened! So that is not something I would want to be working on. But if I can experience a remake as a player then that would probably be okay, and that would satisfy me.”
“So I would not want to work on the remake of Resident Evil 2, because of the reasons I just stated. However, I can honestly say that if there’s ever an opportunity, that makes sense for me or the studio, to work with Capcom again I would very much welcome that opportunity.”
Following his work on Resident Evil 2, Kamiya-san went on to direct Devil May Cry, which originally started out life as Resident Evil 4. He then worked on a number of successful games at the Capcom-funded Clover Studios, including Viewtiful Joe and Okami.
Capcom has yet to formally announce a Resident Evil 2 remake, although a member of the development team who worked on Resident Evil HD Remaster has submitted the first concept art to his bosses for approval.
This follows Capcom asking for ‘honest feedback‘ on a possible remake of the classic PlayStation title via Facebook. Even before these developments, the company has never ruled out the possibility of remaking the game.
