Baldur's Gate 3 Divinity Generative AI Larian Studios News PS5

AI-Generated Writing Is ‘3/10 At Best,’ Says Baldur’s Gate III Lead Writer

Larian Studios’ Writing Director Adam Smith has discussed the topic of generative AI during a Reddit AMA, stating he believes that using the tech for writing purposes isn’t all that successful, calling it “3/10 at best.”

“We don’t have any text generation touching our dialogues, journal entries, or other writing in Divinity,” said Smith. When asked if using generative text as a placeholder helps game production, he replied simply, “it doesn’t. We had a limited group experimenting with tools to generate text, but the results hit a 3/10 at best and those tools are for research purposes, not for use in Divinity.”

“Even my worst first drafts – and there are a LOT of them – are at least a 4/10 although Swen [CEO of Larian] might disagree),” he added, “and the amount of iteration required to get even individual lines to the quality we want is enormous.” Smith further continued by stating there are “great many eyes and hands” that are involved to ensure dialogue meets the required quality.

Larian Studios shipped Baldur’s Gate III for the PC back in August 2023 and released the PS5 version the following month. The RPG was a huge success both critically and commercially, but rather than capitalise on that and continue with the series, Larian soon announced it was moving on from Baldur’s Gate and Dungeons and Dragons in general. Its next project? Divinity, which was revealed at 2025’s The Game Awards.

While Divinity has yet to attract a release date, Larian’s technical director, Bert van Semmertier, revealed during the AMA that the RPG will include co-op at launch.
