In this guide, we’re going to take a look at the Apex Legends best characters. At the launch of Respawn Entertainment’s free-to-play Battle Royale game, there are eight characters to choose from. Check out all the abilities.
Each character (or Legend) has a different set of skills which can be used in battle. And each battle consists of teams of three facing 19 other teams in a battle to be the last team standing.
Apex Legends All Abilities
In the screen before you start a match in Apex Legends, you’ll each get the opportunity to choose your character. Having a balanced team with different skills is what will really help you win, so knowing each characters special skills and talents on the battlefield is crucial.
Each legend has three abilities. A passive ability which is always active, a tactical ability which is triggered by pressing L1 (which has a cooldown) and an ultimate ability which is triggered once you’ve filled up the meter by pressing L1 and R1.
Let’s take a look.
Bloodhound
Role – Technological Tracker
Skills
Passive: Tracker – Foes leave clues behind for you to find
Tactical: Eye of the AllFather – Briefly reveal enemies, traps and clues through all structures in front of you.
Ultimate: Beast of the Hunt – Transform into the ultimate hunter. Enhances your senses, allowing you to see cold tracks and move faster.
Is BloodHound Any Good?
We love Bloodhound. The tactical ability may have a fairly small radius, but it’s really handy if you’re outside a building for checking to see if there’s anyone inside. The ultimate ability also flags up all enemies in red, so they are so much easier to track.
Gibraltar
Role: Shielded Fortress
Passive: Gun Shield – Aiming down sites deploys a gun shield that blocks incoming fire.
Tactical: Dome of Protection – Throw down a dome-shield that blocks attacks for 15 seconds.
Ultimate: Defensive Bombardment – Call in a concentrated mortal strike on a position you mark with smoke.
Is Gibraltar Any Good?
This defensive class has some handy skills. The tactical shield skill can be used by other members of your team too, and give you some vital time to assess the situation, and get out of there if the action is too hot. The defensive bombardment works well, bringing down a rain of fire, but if there’s buildings around it’s easy to avoid.
Lifeline
Role: Combat Medic
Passive: Combat Medic – Revive knocked down teammates faster while protected by a shield wall. Healing items are used 25% faster.
Tactical: D.O.C Heal Drone – The Drone of Compassion automatically heals those near it over time.
Ultimate: Care Package – Call in a dropped full of high quality defensive gear.
Is Lifeline Any Good?
Any good team needs a medic. Being able to heal quickly can be vital and it takes an age when you’re not a medic. We always take Lifeline in our squad. Keep her alive and she could be your savior.
Pathfinder
Role: Forward Scout
Passive: Insider Knowledge – Scan a survey beacon to reveal the rings next location
Tactical: Grappling hook – Grapple to get to out-of-reach places quickly
Ultimate: Zipline Gun – Creates a zipline for everyone to use
Is Pathfinder Any Good?
Pathfinder is a slippery robot. You can move out a situations extremely quickly with your grappling hook, while the zipline allows your team to get swiftly from A to B. The hook is also ideal to reach places where they might be some decent hidden loot. However, we rarely take Pathfinder with us, which says it all. We personally prefer a class that feels more part of the team, and the zipline you don’t really need that often.
Wraith
Role: Interdimensional Skirmisher
Passive: Voices from the Void: You hear a voice when danger approaches. As far as you can tell, it’s on your side.
Tactical: Into the Void – Reposition quickly through the safety of the void space, avoiding all damage.
Ultimate: Dimensional Rift – Link 2 locations with portals for 60 seconds.
Wraith is another tricky squad member. She can move quickly out of the way of danger
Is Wraith Any Good?
The voices from the past ability doesn’t really seem to aid or hamper you much, while her Into The Void power allows you to move out of danger quickly. If you’re the type of player who likes to run for a fight, she’ll be useful, but we much prefer the other classes over both Wraith and Pathfinder. Find out more in our Wraith guide.
Bangalore
Role: Professional Soldier
Passive: Double Time – Taking fire while sprinting makes you move faster for a brief time.
Tactical: Smoke Launcher – Fire a high velocity smoke canister that explodes into a smoke wall on impact.
Ultimate: Rolling Thunder – Call in an artillery strike that slowly creeps across the landscape.
Is Banglaore Any Good?
She’s a tough cookie offering two very good abilities. Smoke is great, especially if you have Bloodhound on your team who can see through it with his ultimate activated and clean up. The artillery strike is also extremely powerful.
Caustic
Role: Toxic Trapper
Passive: Nox Vision – You gain threat vision on enemies moving through your gas
Tactical: Nox Gas Trap – Place up to 6 canisters that release deadly Nox gas when shot or triggered by enemies
Ultimate: Nox Gas Grenade – Blanket a large area in Nox gas.
Caustic is unlocked later on in the game so we’ve yet to play as this character.
Mirage
Role: Holographic Trickster
Passive: Encore! Automatically drop a decoy and cloak for 5 seconds when knocked down.
Tactical: Psyche Out – Send a holographic decoy to confuse the enemy.
Ultimate: Vanishing Act – Mirage deploys a team of decoys to distract enemies, while he cloaks.
Mirage is unlocked later on in the game so we’ve yet to play as this class.
Apex Legends Best Squad Set-Up
Our favorite combination of characters when playing with friends is: Bloodhound, who keeps a track of what’s going on around us, Bangalore who provides great cover with her smoke launcher, but has a deadly ultimate attack, and Lifeline, who stays close and helps heal us when needed, or summons up that defensive armor boost with her ultimate.
Of course, it’s all about gathering the best weapons too. So make sure you check everywhere for loot, and keep an eye on those care packages that drop!
