Assassin’s Creed movie isn’t about making money, but attracting new fans

Ubisoft’s executive director for EMEA has revealed that the purpose of this year’s upcoming Assassin’s Creed film is to attract more consumers to the brand as opposed to making heaps of cash at the box office.

Speaking during an interview with MCV, Alaine Corre said that although money is part of the package, the publishing giant is more keen on opening up the historical action-adventure franchise to new consumers.

"We are not going to earn a lot of money from it. It is a lot more a marketing thing, it is also good for the image of the brand," explained Corre.

"Although we will make some money, it is not the purpose of this movie. The purpose is to bring Assassin’s Creed to more people. We have our core fans, but what we would like is to put this franchise in front of a lot more people who, maybe, will then pick up future Assassin’s Creed games."

Assassin’s Creed is due out in cinemas in December 2016, and stars Michael Fassbender as the lead protagonist. The film adopts a new storyline and is not an adaptation of any of the video games, though the movie is said to feature plenty of Easter Eggs for fans to discover.

Ubisoft is taking a break from its annual release schedule for Assassin’s Creed this year, with a new title not due to ship until late 2017. This marks the first time we haven’t seen a mainline entry in the multi-million selling franchise since 2008.
