‘Big Surprise’ For Mortal Kombat In 2020, Teases Ed Boon

Mortal Kombat co-creator and all-around nice bloke Ed Boon has teased there’s a ‘big surprise’ in store for the spine-snapping fighting game franchise next year. Presumably this isn’t related to the upcoming movie, as that’s not out until March 2021; hopefully, it means we’ll be getting some more content for Mortal Kombat 11.

Mortal Kombat Dev Teases Big Things For 2020

Speaking during the Brasil Game Show, Boon made it clear that the series isn’t ready to retire and mow the lawn just yet.

The story of Mortal Kombat, we’re pretty much calling [Mortal Kombat 11] the end of the story… We’re certainly not through with Mortal Kombat. You know, there are more characters that are gonna come and we have a big surprise coming next year for Mortal Kombat.

NetherRealm still has yet to release the full lineup for the Mortal Kombat 11 Kombat Pack, so there’s still three characters in the pipeline: Sindel (November 2019), Joker (January 2020), and Spawn (March 2020).

Beyond that, the studio hasn’t announced any more content for the critically acclaimed fighting game, but who knows, a second Kombat Pack could be in the pipeline. Look at Namco’s success with Tekken 7 for example; the game launched over two years ago, and is in its third season of DLC with no signs of slowing down.

Mortal Kombat 11 was released in April for PlayStation 4, PC, Nintendo Switch, and Xbox One. The game features an all-star cast of characters and a time-bending plot that sees the likes of Sonya and Johnny Cage coming face-to-face with their younger counterparts for the first time in the series.

Recently, NetherRealm released another guest character in the shape of the Terminator T-800, modelled after actor and former bodybuilding champion Arnold Schwarzenegger’s likeness.
