Bloodborne Executive Producer, Masami Yamamoto, has announced that he has left Japan Studio as of February 28, 2021, marking another major departure from the studio, which Sony is slowly closing down.
Confirming the news last month, Sony confirmed that it is effectively shutting down Japan Studio, winding down its operations and not renewing contracts, but keeping Team Asobi (creators of the Astro-Bot games) open. Yamamoto announced the news on Twitter today saying that “I retired from SIE Japan Studio on February 28th.” He then goes on to say “My job at [first] was full of happiness as a game creator”, which suggests that the last few years haven’t been too great for the creators at Japan Studio, as they have barely released new projects, mostly focusing on support work.
This is another major departure from the studio after a Bloodborne producer and Demon’s Souls producer left, alongside three notable figures from the studio, who have now formed Bokeh Game Studio. We don’t expect Yamamoto’s departure to be the last either, as Sony slowly winds down the studio’s operations.
