Crystal Dynamics Boss Says Tomb Raider Dev Is ‘Excited To Show Where We’re Heading’ In 2023

The CEO of Crystal Dynamics and Eidos Montreal has touched base on the next entry in the Tomb Raider franchise, saying the team are ‘excited’ to show where the franchise is heading next year.

Speaking during the company’s Q2 2022/23 Interim Report, Phil Rogers wouldn’t be drawn into commenting on anything specific about Lara Croft’s next adventure, but talked up the application of the Unreal Engine 5, which will be used to push storytelling to the next level.

Standing back, to us fundamentally, this is about the deep-rooted partnerships we’re creating for the future of Tomb Raider, as a beloved franchise across games and/or media. Our partnership with Epic Games and the integration of Unreal Engine 5 into our development toolchain really lets us push story-telling to new levels.

We’ve not released details about franchise plans, but the team is excited to show where we’re heading, as soon as we can next year.

Crystal Dynamics officially took control of Tomb Raider and Legacy of Kain back in September, and soon confirmed that a new Tomb Raider was in the works using Unreal Engine 5. A leaked script for the new game leaked earlier in the year, prompting Square Enix to request its removal from the public domain.

The last entry in the Tomb Raider series, Shadow of the Tomb Raider, launched in 2018 and concluded the rebooted trilogy that began in 2013.
