Cyberpunk 2077 Dev Says Focus On First-Person View Is ‘The Right Choice’

Cyberpunk 2077 level designer Max Pears has said that CD Projekt RED made the right choice to put a heavy emphasis on a first-person view for the upcoming sci-fi title. While there will be some select areas where you’ll be able to see your character fully, the majority of the game takes place from a first-person viewpoint, including gameplay and cutscenes.

Cyberpunk 2077 Dev Stands By First-Person Viewpoint Decision

Speaking with Video Games Chronicle at the Tokyo Game Show 2019 this week, Pears commented:

I hope people understand that we have thought about this and there is logic to our process. We’ve not just thrown this in randomly: there is a lot of thought that’s gone into it. In last year’s demo you saw the interactive dialogue system, where somebody pulled a gun on your face. I don’t think you would necessarily get that same impact in third-person.

There are clearly some people who are really strong and passionate [about this issue], but we believe that this is the right choice for this game.

Hopefully when people get the chance to experience it for themselves, they’ll understand why we’ve gone in that direction.

Pears was also quizzed if the third-person cutscenes that were depicted in the Cyberpunk 2077 E3 2018 demo had been changed to first-person, to which he responded:

From my experience, no. But most of the levels I worked on featured cut-scenes in a first-person perspective anyway.

Cyberpunk 2077 is scheduled for release on PlayStation 4, PC, and Xbox One on April 16, 2020. CD Projekt RED recently confirmed that it will be releasing a multiplayer mode for the game post-launch, and also revealed details about its gender customisation system.

One thing that still remains up in the air is a New Game Plus mode, with the studio apparently still considering if it will be included in the game.
