It seems all the tongue-wagging about us getting a Cyberpunk 2077 release date locked for 2019 was way off the mark. According to Kotaku’s Jason Schreier, who is usually pretty spot on when it comes industry gossip, CD Projekt Red’s ambitious sci-fi behemoth is not launching this year. It might not be all that surprising, as we’ve not seen all that much on the game and it seems very likely at this point it’ll be one of the last big games out for current consoles.
Cyberpunk 2077 Release Date Now Looking Likely For 2020
Schreier’s comments were succinct, stating that Cyberpunk 2077 is “absolutely not coming out this year.” Still, even if the game isn’t out in 2019, that doesn’t mean that we won’t be getting anything on Cyberpunk soon. We know the game is showing up at E3, and CD Projekt Red has said that this year’s show will be the most important one in its entire history. New gameplay is definitely being shown off, too.
A Cyberpunk 2077 release date announcement was expected to drop at the Los Angeles-based event, and while that could still happen, it seems a bit unlikely if the game isn’t coming out until 2020 as Schreier has indicated.
Cyberpunk 2077 has been a long time coming, having first been announced way back in 2012 and pre-production kicking off until after completion of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Blood and Wine. The game is based off of the tabletop RPG Cyberpunk 2020, and is set in a sprawling open-world known as Night City, located in California. Players control Mercenary V, who is fully customisable with various weapons and can acquire new skills across three distinct classes.
The game support a full day/night cycle, and V can navigate the city by foot or in customisable vehicles. You can also fork out for apartments to use as home bases, while branching dialogues can be used when interacting with NPCs. As for combat, there’s three types of ranged weapons — Power, Tech, and Smart — and four damage types, namely Physical, Thermal, EMP, and Chemical.
