Dark Souls Creator Says FromSoftware Hasn’t Turned Its Back On Making Single-Player Games

FromSoftware boss and Dark Souls creator Hidetaka Miyazaki has revealed during a chat with IGN that the developer is keen to switch gears back to single-player games following the multiplayer-focussed Elden Ring: Nightreign and The Duskbloods.

The studio has of course largely specialised in single-player games with the likes of Demon’s Souls, the Dark Souls franchise, and Elden Ring, but dabbled in traditional multiplayer with its latest projects. However, Miyazaki-san has made it clear FromSoftware is looking to return to what it’s known for.

It’s funny because there was never really any big plan that these two games would both release next to each other. I mean, that’s a different director, but both of those ideas just coincided with being multiplayer games. It’s not necessarily some big reveal saying that this is the direction we plan to go moving forward. We still have a heavy focus on single-player content as well. This is just something that happened to work out the way it did.

But it’s like, the more you work on something multiplayer for a long time, if anything, it scratches that itch only to want to make something single-player again.

As for what FromSoftware is cooking up next, well, that remains unknown for the time being. Given the huge success of Elden Ring we wouldn’t be surprised if a full-blown sequel is in the pipeline, although Miyazaki himself said back in December 2024 that the game was ‘not in consideration‘ at FromSoftware at the time.
