The president of Sony Interactive Entertainment America (SIEA) has confirmed that Hideo Kojima’s Death Stranding is already up and running in playable form.
Speaking during an interview with The Telegraph, Shawn Layden revealed that he’s actually sampled the highly anticipated PlayStation 4-exclusive title himself, and from what little he could reveal, it’s shaping up mighty impressive. Sadly, we didn’t get to see the game this year, although Kojima had already confirmed as much prior to E3.
“It’s up and running. It’s been aided tremendously after Kojima-San decided to co-opt the Decima Engine from Guerrilla. And, gosh, that really gave him a leg up to get up and running and test it and have some prototype levels running. I couldn’t explain to you what the game is…”
Layden was then asked if he had played the game, to which he confirmed that was indeed the case. When quizzed if it was as revolutionary as we’ve been lead to believe, the executive replied, “All that and more!” following a ‘thoughtful pause.’
Death Stranding was announced during Sony’s E3 2016 press conference by Kojima himself, who took to the stage to unveil the title by way of a decidedly ambiguous teaser trailer. The Metal Gear creator later confirmed that Death Stranding would be an action game and contain online elements, although he ruled out the possibility of multiple endings.
While we’ve yet to find out exactly when the game will hit shelves, Kojima did manage to narrow down the Death Stranding release date somewhat, stating the game will be available before 2019. Despite the long wait, the Kojima Productions boss assured fans that the title will not be a PS5 release, though has mooted the possibility of a sequel.
The game’s cast includes a number of previous Kojima collaborators, including Guillermo Del Toro and Norman Reedus, who worked with the celebrated game designer on the now-cancelled Silent Hills.
