Death Stranding update from Hideo Kojima isn’t the good news we hoped for

Hideo Kojima has confirmed that his studio’s highly anticipated PlayStation 4-exclusive action game, Death Stranding, will not be present at E3 next week.

The Metal Gear maestro took to Twitter to confirm the news, stating that the team is putting all its focus on development, though the project is still in its infancy. Not much has been showcased on the game since its decidedly ambiguous debut trailer during Sony’s E3 2016 press event last summer, although work is said to be ‘going well.’

Apologies to our fans, Death Stranding will not be @ E3 as we are fully focused on development. Pls see me with @geoffkeighley on 6/14!” wrote Kojima-san.

Death Stranding release date due before 2019

Death Stranding will feature Norman Reedus (The Walking Dead) in a starring role, and will also involve feature an appearance by Hollywood director Guillermo Del Toro. Both previously worked with Kojima briefly on the ill-fated Silent Hills before it was unceremoniously scrapped by Konami in 2015. The game will feature some form of online mode and include vehicles, although multiple endings are apparently not on the cards.

Despite the fact the game is still quite a way off, Kojima has made it clear that the project is slated for release on the PS4 and won’t be quietly push to PS5. He’s also not ruled out the possibility of a sequel, although it’s obviously too early to talk about that in detail yet. Death Stranding will utilise the Decima engine previously employed by Guerrilla Games for Horizon: Zero Dawn, and did not enter full development until early this year.

Death Stranding is the first game from the newly-established independent branch of Kojima Productions, which was set up following Kojima’s departure from Konami in late 2015.
