Destiny dev will squeeze every ounce of juice out of PS3, 360

The PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360’s technical prowess will be fully tested to the limit with Bungie’s forthcoming Destiny, the former Halo developer has confirmed.

Speaking with the chaps at Game Informer (via Worldsfactory), Technical Director Chris Butcher confirmed that Sony and Microsoft’s last-generation machines will have every ounce of juice squeezed out of them for the hotly-anticipated sci-fi shooter.

Said Butcher: “The current generation of consoles, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, they have a lot of headroom still for us. We have the most optimized game engine we’ve ever produced for these consoles. We’re getting at the point now where we are wringing pretty much every ounce of juice out of the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3.

“We’re running higher character counts and higher player counts than we thought would even be possible on these things because we’re using every ounce of the CPUs and the SPUs and we’re offloading stuff to the graphics processor. You’re basically eating the whole buffalo at this point in the current generation. And that’s been our target right from the start is to make sure that we can provide that game experience that is consistent for everybody.”

Destiny takes the form of a FPS with RPG elements, putting gamers into an expansive and immaculately-crafted mythic sci-fi setting. The game centers on a group of mixed race of freedom fighters known as the Guardians, who represents humanity’s only hope of defense of its last remaining city.

Players can pick from one of three classes to supplement their chosen race, each sporting its own unique set of attributes and combat specialities. Great emphasis is placed on the multiplayer component, with Bungie’s ‘hopper’ technology facilitating the matchmaking process for co-op and competitive game modes.

Destiny is scheduled to ship for PS4, PS3, PC, Xbox One and Xbox 360 on September 9, 2014.
