Bioware Dragon Age Dragon Age Return Unlikely News PS5

Dragon Age Is Unlikely To Return Due To EA’s Greenlighting Process, Says Series Producer Mark Darrah

Mark Darrah, series producer on the Dragon Age franchise and a veteran of developer BioWare, has cast doubt over the fantasy-RPG making a comeback in the near future.

Speaking with FRVR, Darrah, who worked at BioWare for 23 years, stated his belief that Dragon Age has been pushed aside while the developer focuses its efforts on the next Mass Effect game, and could lay untouched due to the way publisher Electronic Arts pitches new titles for existing IPs.

I have no concept of who could, would, possibly pitch [a new Dragon Age] at EA. EA owns a frightening number of IPs that are dormant. What I’ve heard is if you go and decide you’re going to make a [game based on an IP]… the instant you’re about to start, suddenly like three different people who think they control it come out of the woodwork and essentially rip you apart and chew you up and spit you out.

As such, Darrah feels the only people who could pitch a new Dragon Age would be BioWare, “but the problem is I don’t know who at BioWare would pitch a Dragon Age.”

So the other option is somebody else within the EA organisation decides they’re gonna pitch a Dragon Age and, what I expect would happen if they try to do that, is somebody at BioWare would essentially become one of those people jumping under the vents to rip that person apart. I suspect that it wouldn’t happen for a variety of reasons.

Darrah commented back in January 2025 during a members-only video that BioWare’s only major project following Dragon Age: The Veilguard is Mass Effect 5, despite the fact the developer had in the past frequently juggled multiple projects at a time. Earlier this month, Dragon Age series creator David Gaider told PCGamer that he thinks the franchise is “unlikely” to return due to the commercial failure of Dragon Age: The Veilguard.

Dragon Age: The Veilguard launched for PS5, PC, and Xbox Series X/S in October 2024, and you can read our full review here. In January 2025, EA revealed that the fantasy-RPG “underperformed” financially, that same month a number of Dragon Age team members revealed that had been laid off following restructuring at BioWare.
