Update: Bandai Namco has confirmed the following details regarding Dragon Ball Fighterz loot boxes:

Overwatch's core cosmetics collection with over 100 new items, including skins, sprays, player icons, emotes, and more for all 26 heroes. Starting January 23, players will be able to earn these cosmetics in standard Loot Boxes and unlock them via the Hero Gallery all year long.

Original story: Players with early access to Dragon Ball Fighterz have confirmed that loot boxes will feature in Bandai Namco's fighting game.

Screenshots have emerged of Z Capsules which can be bought through currency you earn in-game called Zeni, or through Premium Z Coins. The loot boxes apparently don't contain items that will help you in battle, but cosmetic items and avatars.

Dragon Ball Fighterz Loot Boxes Can’t Be Bought

There's a bit of confusion about whether you can purchase loot boxes with real-money. While Kotaku reporter, Michael Fahey took to Twitter, stating: “Just confirmed with Bandai Namco that there is no way to purchase capsules with real money, it's all in-game currency earned through battles,” the following screenshot seems to suggest otherwise and shows a link to the Xbox Store.

Our theory is that perhaps Bandai Namco were going to allow players to buy ZCoins, but changed their minds prior to launch due to the current backlash over loot boxes from gamers, which came to a head with the release of Star Wars Battlefront II. Bandai Namco has not issued an official statement.
