Final Fantasy 9 References In Final Fantasy 14 Dawntrail Expansion Are A ‘Secret,’ Says Yoshi-P

Naoki ‘Yoshi-P’ Yoshida, the director on Final Fantasy XIV, has touched base on the multiple references to Final Fantasy IX in the latest expansion for the MMORPG, which comes in wake of various rumours about a possible remake of the PSOne classic.

Speaking at PAX East during the announcement of preorder and digital bonuses for Final Fantasy XIV: Dawntrail, he commented, “You may have noticed a lot of Final Fantasy 9 references here… the reason is a secret.”

There’s been chatter about a Final Fantasy IX for a few years now. Back in July 2020, artist Toshiyuki Itahana, revealed that the game is still very popular among its creators and acknowledged the game’s popularity among fans. He also revealed that he would ‘be delighted’ if the team were given the chance to continue the story.

Jeff Grubb claimed in June last year that a Final Fantasy IX remake is definitely happening, and in September the same year, leaker ImAHeroToo said that the FFIX remake was originally scheduled for a Summer 2024 launch window but is unlikely to happen (and given that we’re now in March 2024 and have heard nothing on the game, it looks like he was right).
