Final Fantasy XIV, the massively multiplayer online role-playing game, has passed the five million player registered mark worldwide across PS4, PS3 and PC, publisher Square Enix has announced.
Released back 2010 and to a relatively tepid reception, Final Fantasy XIV has managed to turn its initially mixed fortunes completely around to become of the most celebrated MMOs of recent years. Its success is in no short part due to the heralded post-release guidance of Dragon Quest director Naoki Yoshida, who’s widely credited with adapting the game’s role-playing mechanics and refining them to the point of widespread adulation.
It’s worth noting that the five-million milestone also does not include free trials, making the lofty number that bit more impressive.
Most recently, Final Fantasy XIV received a massive expansion entitled: ‘Heavensward’ back in June, which included added story elements, a new playable race, a 10-level cap increase, new dungeons/raids and more.
Don’t forget to check out our interview with Yoshida-san from this year’s E3, which can be found right here, too.
