Speaking during an interview with Digital Foundry, PS5 architect Mark Cerny has revealed that Sony’s upgraded PSSR (PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution) runs faster than the original version of the technology.
PSSR arrived in upgraded form as part of a recent PS5 system software update, and is already supported by a number of major tiles including Resident Evil Requiem and Monster Hunter Wilds, with the likes of Alan Wake 2, Cyberpunk 2077, and more set to take advantage of the tech.
I was a bit uncertain about whether there could be a user option to upgrade all PSSR-supported titles to the new PSSR the key issue being that for that option to make sense, the new PSSR would have to be faster than the original one. We made that our target, and ultimately managed to achieve it – the new PSSR is something like 100 microseconds faster than the original. Which in turn allowed us to implement the ‘Enhance PSSR Image Quality’ option to force-upgrade all PSSR-supported games. If you use it, frame drops should become oh-so-slightly rarer.
Speaking during the same interview, Cerny also revealed that PlayStation will eventually support a form of FSR Frame Generation, which presumably means that this will be supported by the PS6.
Sony has teamed with AMD for Project Amethyst, which is set to define the technology utilised in its next-generation PlayStation console. Speaking in a video last October alongside Jack Huynh, Senior Vice President & General Manager of Computing and Graphics Group for AMD, Cerny touched on Radiance Cores and Universal Compression, noting he’s “really excited about bringing them to a future console in a few years time.”
