The voice actor behind Colonel Campbell in the Metal Gear Solid franchise, has made it clear that it’s a “real slap in the face” if someone uses his voice lines without permission — and that includes the use of AI.
Paul Riding, who in addition to voicing Snake’s loyal commander has appeared in the likes of Fallout and Persona 5, took to Twitter to post the following:
Please read. If you do not have written permission to use my voice, you DO NOT HAVE PERMISSION to use my voice, including AI use. Doing so is a violation of my legal rights and a real slap in the face.
While on the subject of AI and Metal Gear voice actors, David Hayter, who voices Solid Snake, also made it clear that he’s not a fan of AI technology, telling Eurogamer:
Anybody who steals your voice should be locked up for forever If you think you’re going to get the thousands of subtle, emotional adjustments that [fellow voice actor] Jennifer Hale is going to give you word for word, you’re fooling yourself.Yes, legally, we should all be protected against these idiots trying to repurpose our voices for free, or our voices or images or writing, what have you. But technologically, I’m not terribly concerned, I think it’ll always be soulless.
Konami is currently working on a Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater, a remake of the 2004 PS2 game Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, as well as remastering Metal Gear Solid 1, 2, and 3 as part of the Metal Gear Solid Master Collection Vol.1.
