NetherRealm doesn’t want to be limited to Mortal Kombat

Mortal Kombat head honcho Ed Boon has said that developer NetherRealm is eager have a pop at making ‘different types of games’ beyond the venerable bloody beat-‘em-up franchise.

Last year’s eponymous MK reboot was a hit with critics and punters lapped it up, with the game selling over three million copies to date.

However, while conceding that a sequel would be expected of the company, Boon stressed that NetherRealm is also keen to spread its wings.

"I would be surprised if Warner Bros. and us never released another Mortal Kombat game again. We don’t have a title to announce, but if this last one sold over 3 million and counting, there’s a certain amount of assumption that we’d consider doing another Mortal Kombat game,” Boon told GameSpot.

"But at the same time, we want our studio to do more than just make Mortal Kombat games. We love making them but we also want to do different types of games. Different genres, different IPs."

The MK co-creator went on to say that NetherRealm’s Batman: Arkham City Lockdown for iOS was a result of the studio ‘dipping their foot’ into other genres.

"We’re going to continue in that direction, but I would be surprised if we never did another Mortal Kombat game again," Boon concluded.

Mortal Kombat will be coming to PlayStation Vita in spring 2012 with exclusive new features.
