SEGA has started teasing its long-awaited Crazy Taxi revival in a post on the series’ X account, its first in seven years and the first real development we’ve got since the project was announced at The Game Awards 2023.
There’s not much to see from the teaser, as it simply shows a taxi light illuminated on top of a cab — you can watch it here. However, given the fact we’re in very close proximity to two major events — State of Play and Summer Game Fest — we could be getting a reveal at either of those events. Then again, SEGA could be waiting to reveal the project later in the year, so we’ll just have to wait and see.
SEGA only recently reassured that its reboots of classic IPs including Crazy Taxi, Golden Axe, Jet Set Radio and Streets of Rage were still coming, despite the cancellation of its ‘Super Game’ project. In March 2024, a leaker claimed that Crazy Taxi and Jet Set Radio would both be getting Unreal Engine 5 remakes, and had previously claimed that the new Crazy Taxi title would be a live service title supporting up to 100 players via a survival mode.
Crazy Taxi was released in arcades in 1999 and was ported to the Dreamcast the following year, and later, the GameCube and PlayStation 2. A full sequel, Crazy Taxi 2, hit the Dreamcast in 2001. The game has a simple premise in that players control a yellow cab and are tasked with picking up and dropping off customers as quickly as possible, and is known for its extensive use of product placement.
