New DOOM Game Is Reportedly In The Works, Id Software Not Turned To Support Studio

Tom Warren has revealed that a new DOOM video game is currently in the works at Id Software, noting that the developer hasn’t been turned into a support studio despite previous reports.

Writing in a brief post on X, Warren commented, “while the id layoffs have been deep, I understand the changes haven’t turned id into a support studio. Instead, they’re now in the early stages of a new Doom game.”

Id Software was one of many studios hit by the mass Xbox layoffs announced last week, which also saw Double Fine Productions and Compulsion Games going independent while Ninja Theory and Undead Labs have been sold to as-yet unconfirmed buyers.

In regards to Id Software, a former VFX artist, Derek Best, revealed in a post on LinkedIn last week that the company was hit hard by layoffs and had been “nuked into the dirt” and effectively reduced “to support studio size.” Furthermore, a WARN notice stated 96 workers were laid off in Richardson, Texas — where Id Software is based — with 40 remote jobs also lost.

GamesBeat also reported that Id Software had pitched a number of projects prior to the layoffs, including a new Perfect Dark game and a new IP influenced by John Wick. The latter was known as Fury and pitched by DOOM series director Hugo Martin, combining science-fiction, noir, and Chicago mobsters.
