The NPD Group has confirmed that Xbox One has outsold the PlayStation 4 in North America for the fourth consecutive month.
PS4 vs Xbox One: Microsoft scores another victory in the U.S.
Microsoft has enjoyed a major surge in sales since the launch of the Xbox One S in the summer, with the console able to sustain momentum thanks to the release of high-profile titles such as Gears of War 4.
Sony on the other hand, despite the launch of the PS4 Slim in mid-September, has not been able to match Xbox One’s success in the U.S., although no doubt the format holder is looking to change that with the release of the PS4 Pro this week.
Outside of the console’s victory over PS4 in the U.S., it seems Xbox One has also managed to gain some extra traction in the U.K. and Australia to boot. Until recently, PS4 sales have outpaced its leading rival in most territories on a monthly basis.
"Thanks to the passion of Xbox fans worldwide and their continued excitement for Xbox One S, Xbox One was once again the best-selling console in October in the US, UK. and Australia according to NPD Group and GfK Entertainment," commented Mike Nichols, head of Xbox marketing. "Xbox One has been the best-selling console in the U.S. for the past four months, and in the U.K. and Australia in each of the last two months."
PS4 and Xbox One both launched in November 2013, although Sony’s flagship console quickly gained the upper hand in terms of worldwide sales. To date, the PS4 has shipped almost 48 million units worldwide, although Microsoft has been notoriously cagey in regards to how well Xbox One has performed.
The PS4 Pro released worldwide yesterday and allows for a variety of enhancements, including 4K resolution, improved visuals, and increased frame rate for compatible titles. The system is priced at $399/£349, the same price that the PS4 originally retailed for at launch.
