PS4 players could face Xbox One players online thanks to Rocket League’s cross-network play

The myth of the console wars could soon becoming a gaming reality as Rocket League developer Psyonix announced that cross-network play is in the works, meaning potential shared online play between PS4, PC and Xbox One.

It was Microsoft who initially announced this surprising news earlier, with the Xbox One notoriously having a strict one-system online multiplayer server ruling until now. The plan is to first merge servers with the PC platform in the next few months, with ‘other’ platforms to be possibly added to it at a later date. Of course, the ‘other’ platforms with Rocket League currently amount to just one; the PS4.

Psyonix wrote this about the jaw-dropping announcement on their website

Welcome to the new age of online gaming!
Officially confirmed by our friends at Microsoft earlier today, Rocket League and Xbox One cross-network play will soon become a reality!
To say that the team here at Psyonix is both honored and excited to have Rocket League as the first cross-network game is a massive understatement. Cross-network play has been the number-one most requested feature our community has asked for since Rocket League was first announced on Xbox One, and now that we are able to pursue complete online unity on all platforms, today’s announcement is a dream come true.
Expect to see Rocket League cross-network play working on Xbox One and PC later this spring, with information regarding other platforms coming soon.
We can’t wait!

Sounds exciting right? Could it pave the way for other cross-network games between Microsoft and Sony if everything works out? It’d certainly help smaller games gain a larger overall community instead of being starved out of existence with three smaller chunks.

Best get practicing then people, now you could pour salt on Xbox fan wounds by thrashing them at Rocket League.
